With how many rumours are coming out, and the likelihood that even leaked information would be heavily distorted from being third hand information, I think it is becoming nearly impossible to get any meaningful information from these rumours.
With that said 3D and holograms are (effectively) optical illusions that have been created in a variety of ways for over a century. While I’m certain there are a multitude of ways to create 3D effects, and there are probably ways it could be done using a conventional screen, I find the current rumour to be difficult to believe simply because of how poor it sounds from a usability perspective.

Right. The 3DS needing a "sweet spot" is iffy enough from a usability perspective, then apply that issue to hundreds of makes and models of televisions applied in millions of different kinds of setups in homes across varying cultures around the world.
It just wouldn't work

I wouldn't expect it to be anything like the 3DS if it did infact exist ...
My thought was just that 3D on a conventional TV has been possible since the first colour TVs were released with those Red-Blue 3D glasses, and there are (probably) dozens of other ways that it would be possible for 3D to be done on a conventional TV. Many of these ideas have probably been tried in the past and may have (for one reason or another) been abandoned. It is entirely possible that Nintendo could have found and developed one of these long forgotten approaches and built their next system around it. That is where I think the plausability of the rumour ends though ...
It is highly likely that an approach like this would require glasses or some other way to alter a person's view of the screen; and I would doubt that it would involve something that would require the controller to be held between a person’s face and the screen simply because that would be awkward and uncomfortable.
