Given inflation and exchange rates, $250 is easily what we paid for the DS as far as the Yen is concerned

The DS launched at  ¥16,800. That's significantly less than the 3DS' 25,000 even if you take into account inflation. Inflation doesn't go up almost 50% in 6-7 years.  The 3DS is a pretty expensive piece of tech and I don't think Nintendo is overcharging for it. But I think it would have been wiser for Nintendo to have delayed the release until when the 3D tech got a lot cheaper. It's never a good time to launch a ¥25,000 gaming handheld, let alone during a global economic recession. Nintendo is forgetting what brought them to the dance (focusing more on innovation and affordable pricing than graphical prowess). The 3DS is going to outsell NGP easily but I don't see it recreating the success of the DS. If Nintendo tries to pull the same stunts with Wii 2/Wii HD (launching it earlier than it should be, building an expensive powerhouse with a high price tag), it won't have the success of the Wii. Nintendo doesn't know their audience. Soccer moms aren't going to be forking down $250 US on a handheld for their kid unless that kid is really spoiled. And I'd imagine that Wii 2/Wii HD would piss off a lot of people that bought a $200 Wii recently as well. If the Wii was like $150 for awhile, then yeah you can see it coming.

Under exchange rates, i meant. In Yen (this is all without inflation) we paid roughly 18,000 for the DS at the time, whereas $250 today nets you a little over 20k. The Japanese were definitely overcharged especially given the strengthening yen, but our rate remains almost flat, with inflation, it would probably come closer still to even. From the NOJ's perspective, we're getting charged about the same as we were

The difference is tech prices overall have dropped. And I didn't buy those arguments to justify the PS3's price, and I'm not buying this here. Nintendo said they charged as much because of enthusiasm, so they could have charged less and gotten more customers.

This at least will teach Nintendo not to listen to E3 hype (which they claimed they partly based pricing on). Plus cutting price quick didn't hurt the iPhone 1's success.

Even better, nor did cutting the price quickly hurt the DS.

lol none of the companies invented HD and it is a natural evolution to what things should be like. So you mean Sony copied MS by adding HD to their console as well? lol

Nintendo invents most of its stuff or adds stuff that never was used for games before so that can be called copy when others do the same

Of course it will have HD but not the same thing can be said about motion and analogue sticks and stuff. If it wasn’t for Nintendo we would probably still be playing with joysticks and a button till this day :P

Yes. Sony followed MS into the HD console market, just like Nintendo will be following them too.

And yes. We've heard for Years now that Sony/MS have copied Nintendo on those things too. This is why it's going to be funny when Nintendo go HD. Why it's kinda funny that Nintendo went Sony's route and put an analogue on the handheld.

I'm also pretty sure the Wii Remote wasn't "invented" by Nintendo, it was "invented" by Gyration Inc. Nintendo just got them to make a motion controller... Although I could be wrong. Anyway, it's not like Sony didn't dip into motion control with the PS2, even if that WAS a copy of something else.

All I'm saying is, it's gonna be funny watching the same people who attack Sony/MS try to defend Nintendo when they go HD

Sorry was not clear enough where I said Nintendo invents most of its stuff and adds stuff that has never been used in gaming before. With that I meant they take things like motion from others and use it in gaming etc.

If we are going too ad “HD” in too the “Copy” section then why not add better graphics as well?
