breath of fire 5 had save tokens?

Yes, you started with one in the US version and nine in the PAL version. You could find additional save tokens along the way, but they were still rare. While it sounds like the PAL version was easier, it was actually more annoying, because the soft save function got removed.

Man that sounds a bit hardcore.
