Forums - Nintendo - 3DS and Pokemon MMO (speculation)

First off, let me clarify there is no announcement, rumour or anything to indicate a Pokemon MMO will happen.  Sorry if anyone got there hopes up.

However, many times over the last 4 and 1/2 years people (including myself) have speculated if Nintendo would bring a Pokemon MMO out onto Wii.  Afterall, it seemed a perfect match and a Pokemon MMO would sell countless millions.  Nintendo would be crazy not to!

Well, they didn't and aren't going to.  Nintendo themselves has stated they want to keep the main Pokemon games on the portable systems.   So Wii gets Pokepark.    However, the chances for a Pokemon MMO may be better than ever.

The 3DS is an even more apt platform for a Pokemon MMO.

Consider:

 - It's a portable system, where Pokemon games are most regconized and sell best

- It has more robust online

- You could form groups or battle with your friends (playing nearby) or as usual online

- It has the power and graphics to really make such a game shine

-  Touch screen allows more imput options for MMO (which generally require a keyboard)

- Mic allows you to talk to other players

- Camera allows you to see other players

- Streetpass could allow you to fight or collect from passerbyers

- Nintendo could use the AR Card tech to take Pokemon collecting to the next level.  Imagine if they put posters or markers in (unannounced) designated spots across the country (say Japan anyway) with an imbedded 'AR Card' that once seen by the 3DS cameras would unlock a pokemon battle (AR Card style) with a pokemon unique to that physical location.  Malls, attractions and Tourism offices would love that.  People traveling around just to capture unique Pokemon.  And imagine the bragging rights of having them all!

- If 3DS does indeed get a Monster Hunter, the combination of Monster Hunter and a Pokemon MMO would send 3DS sales through the roof for ages (at least in Japan).

Don't know if it'll happen, but it should!  Thoughts...?

If it worked well ( I doubt it ever would) it would be epic. I just wish GameFreak would move over to PC and do it already =/

I seriously doubt that Nintendo would release the Pokemon MMO for the 3DS, imo it would feel quite weird playing an MMO through a handheld, if I want an MMO i'd choose a PC or at least the consoles

business wise, I think releasing a Pokemon MMO on the 3DS would hurt Pokemon *insert colour here* 3DS's sales, I think they're going for the same market, and I think gamers would buy the MMO and not buy the Pokemon *insert colour here*

Pokemon would have to be rebalanced very drastically if they were to make an MMO.

Before i go on to clarify the above statement, i think your idea of an AR and Street Pass assisted Pokemon game would be dynamite, and could very well be the next big thing the franchise does, and would be a good way to get the kiddies to keep a 3DS in their pocket instead of an iPhone.

But on the above, imagine if Pokemon as it were was made into an MMO, then think of the world of competitive Pokemon and how drastically different it is from the games as we know them. Everything outside the "overused" tier would functionally cease to exist, and then we would have a dry game that would be very, very hostile to both n00bs and casual players very quick.

Given how much they'd have to change about the world of Pokemon to make an MMO work, they might as well just go ahead and make a completely new franchise that works similarly to Pokemon but has different ground rules

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

It would be incredibly difficult to pull off a Pokemon MMO successfully

Not with the money GameFreak has gathered over the years. I would think it would be easy. Then again i don't know how much they rake in. Either way though, it would be fucking awesome. I want it now. And then....A zombie mmo xD

The thought of an online game being immensely popular in Japan is ridiculous.

I know that people have repeatedly suggested a Pokémon MMO in the last few years (usually those who don't really play Pokémon), but I don't think anyone really has put much thought into it. It's just that Pokémon is popular and so is World of Warcraft, so combining the two is seen as a fantastic idea for everyone, gamers and Nintendo.

But an MMO would drastically alter what Pokémon is and how it plays, is that something the fans really want? If Final Fantasy is anything to go by, then the answer is no. Ultimately it would be a lot of work to create such a game and it would require a whole new level of commitment from gamers as well, all that for a game that will undoubtly be (much) worse than the real Pokéman titles. A waste of everybody's time, so to say.

You are out of your mind!

It would be perfect! It could be like the pokemon game on gamecube (colleseum) only with more players and a bigger open world. It would be amazing.

you know i used to think having a pokemon mmo would be awesome

but then i started thinking. ISN'T IT ALREADY AN MMO

i mean if i'm walking around the street and see a person with a ds, we both have pokemon so we take out our games and battle.  Is that not what pokemon is?  two trainers seeing each other in the REAL WORLD and battling it out.  not sitting at home playing over the internet

i do love the AR idea though.  not sure if be ar though, cause be a pain to have say a giant line waiting to get your ar turn and especailly fi those people suck.  be nice if when you scanned the ar card it showed you a nice 3d representation/animation but then its scanned into game and you battle on the 3ds and not usin the ar function.  its like scanning mii barcodes essentially.

It already is hard enough at times to pull myself away from a game to get shit done.

A Pokemon MMORPG would only appeal to the "core" audience, so to speak, as in less than 10% of Pokemon's fanbase. Plus, this is the same fanbase that goes "B-but it's new! Get it away! *goes to cry in corner*" at every little change Pokemon makes. As soon as it comes out, they'll say "Oh no, Game Freak ruined Pokemon (again)! They're just out to make money, which they totally weren't before! I never wanted an MMORPG!" after deleting every trace of people wishing for a Pokemon MMORPG.
