Forums - Gaming - Against The Grain: The Wii's return to grace

Some older members of the site may remember a thread a few months back called 'The Wii's Fall From Grace'. It was an article saying how Nintendo has fallen and that the Wii was, in essence, done for.

After a few months, it's clear to see that isn't the case, so here's a rebutal. Conegamer style

1. The system's selling fine

Now, this is the big point, so it only makes sense it comes first. Back in '08 and '09, the Wii was untouchable. It was regularly selling more than the other two systems combined. But now it's lost it's steam

Or has it? How many people have stopped to wonder why it's slipped? Here's a few reasons why:

  • The system is getting older
  • Over 85,000,000 people already own one
  • There are no good games out at the current time
  • The other consoles are now priced more competitively
  • The other consoles have new attachments and games for them
Despite all this, the Wii is still selling ahead of the 360, and just behind the PS3, and will likely finish on top again this year. Not bad for a d00med console.
2. The games library is looking good
Every year, the same thing happens with the Wii. They should make a cycle...
  • Year begins
  • No games come out in the first quarter
  • Haters declare 'doom'
  • Year progresses, more games announced. Lineup bulks out
  • E3, games blowout, extrememly cramped Q4.
  • Designated 'best year'
  • And that looks to be happening this year. I mean, potentially, we have Zelda, Mario, Xenoblade, Sonic, The Last Story, Tales Of Graces, Pandora's Tower, Conduit 2, de Blob 2, and likely loads at E3. Not bad at all!
There's more reasons, but these are the main 2. The Wii isn't doomed. If you think that it is, just wait a few months. Then get ready to eat your words at E3

A small bit from SaviourX, looking more in-depth at this week's sales, and the outlook for the Wii:

    PS3 178,305(-3%)  Wii 161,128(0%) X360 149,140(-5%)

    -          This past weeks sales worldwide. Like mentioned earlier in this thread, given a different perspective, this could make the PS3/360 look bad.

    -          In Japan, Wii only got 5 more games than the PLAYSTATION TWO this year while the PS3 received triple the amount of software. Despite that, the PS3 has sold only 150k more hardware units over there. I’ll give Sony credit though, it is at a higher price:)

    -          The Xbox360, the most heavily supported console this generation, has undergone a console relaunch that is not even infant old (9 months) and it has fallen behind in sales on a worldwide scale. The only potential system seller it has coming up is 25 weeks away, and the 3rd entry in a series (Gears 3). The Wii hasn’t got a lick of support throughout the entirety of its first 120 days this year, and has maintained sales somehow.

    -          Overall, I wouldn’t expect a Wii 2 until Nov. 2012. When Nintendo was enjoying success as a market leader with the NES, they stayed for 6 years before moving on; I expect the same thing here.

    -          DS came 2 years before Wii, GBA came 5 months before GC, and the GB came 2 years before SNES…the correlation between them…I can’t make one :P

What hope does the Wii have this year? GENERIC LIST WAR TIME.

What we know: Zelda, Kirby, Pandora’s Tower, Last Story, Earth Seeker, Xenoblade (Chronicles), Tales of Graces F, Conduit 2, Rodea, and some E3 stuff.

What we guess is coming: Vitality Sensor and maybe a New Super Mario Bros.2; I don’t like speculation.

Considering how spectacularily the Wii started out this generation, and how brilliantly Nintendo did pretty much everything, outselling the Playstation 3 this year isn't really a feat, it's something that should be completely obvious.

The Wii isn't selling poorly, but it's selling poorly compared to the potential it had (or at least seemed to have) two years ago.  It can outshine its opponents and still be selling disappointingly.

People love to overreact, and they take a look at the % of decline and shout "WII IS THE DOOMED!" Most people can't seem to look past the short term, and don't look at the larger picture. Wii could probably not sell a single console from here on out and be just fine. Nintendo stumbled upon a goldmine with Wii and has already made tons of profit, not to mention they hold a nice comfortable lead of 35 plus million on its nearest competitor.

The problem is, as I've said a million times, third parties haven't taken the call to pick up the slack, and especially with Nintendo focused on the 3DS right now, the lineup is almost non existant so far this year. But even with virtually no new games, Wii is essentially battling the other two consoles to a standstill this year, (PS3 has a slight lead, mainly because of it simply being available in more markets) which I find incredible considering the circumstances. So basically, Wii is just fine. In fact, it is more than fine.

What I am concerned about is Nintendo sort of resting on their laurels, and getting lazy with the Wii games. They're already starting to show signs that they have forgotten the formula to what made Wii successful in the first place, making/publishing games that only appeal to a niche of hardcore gamers like Metroid Other M, Monster Hunter Tri, Sin and Punishment 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, etc. Donkey Kong Country Returns is a step in the right direction, but one game will not be enough. They need more games that show they are still interested in appealing to the masses of gamers/non gamers/ex gamers, and they've really neglected to do that for the past year or so, hence the sales are stuck in neutral.

Reggie said they aren’t pullin the plug on the Wii until it sells 45m in Americas. Start the countdown…

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

I don't see why people are saying this is making the PS3 and 360 look bad.  Regardless of how bad the Wii lineup is (and it is), the Wii is the market leader.  It is very hard to overturn that stigma in the market, I think the Christmas rush every year is pretty good evidence of it as the cheap and or most wished for product as a gift.  WE might think of its support as mediocre, but the consumers still see games that are AMAZING, like Wii series, Mario and Just Dance, among many other games.  We've never seen a leader falter before, so people thinking they understand the dynamic completely seem to have quite an ego.
