Forums - Gaming - When will 3rd parties take the Wii seriously?

When a game like Mario Party 8 is kicking Metroid Prime 3's ass it's not hard to figure out why the Wii is getting the kind of games it is. Seriously what incentive is there for third parties to make more expensive hardcore games for the Wii when they can put out something like Carnival Games and make a tidy profit?

Wii Play has more sales than Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess combined. If Wii Sports had been sold seperately in all regions it would very likely have had better sales than Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition and Red Steel COMBINED. That should make is very clear why the Wii is getting the low budget casual stuff.

As for the big budget hardcore games, why would a publisher choose the Wii over multi-platform development on the PC/360/PS3 which has already shown it can move a lot of copies if a hardcore game if it's good. Is there any third party games on the Wii expected to sell 5+ million like they expect Assassin's Creed to eventually move? What about the 4-5+ million for Call of Duty 4?

Sorry buy anyone who thinks that the Wii is suddenly going to get a lot of hardcore games as opposed to the 360/PS3/PC next year or the year after needs to take a reality check.

Post of the thread, good point (s).

I think you're making a mistake assuming developers and publishers care how their game performs compared to any other game on the market. If Take Two can make and market a GTA game for the Wii for $20 Million, and can generate $40 Million in revenues do you really think they care that Majesco has a break out success with Cooking Moma 2 and makes double the revenues off of 1/2 the investment?

I say never. Nintendo will have to rely on good 1st and 2nd party games, which could be better than it sounds for most.
Which do people want? Crappy ports or solid Ninty inhouse?

Ports don't have to be crappy. RE4 and Godfather are quite nice, and I expect Okami and Bully will also be very fun.

Your point is well taken, though. 3rd party support is less important when you have possibly the largest developer in the world making exclusives for your platform.

Yes, Ninty is possibly the most experienced and engrained developer in the world today. Who doesn't know of them? Giants like EA and Ubi are not part of casual peoples everyday vocabulary, despite being among the biggest in the market.

Some ports are good, that's true, but a port is rarely as good as the original, which can make you feel a bit let down at times. RE4 is brilliant on the Wii, but I think it's rather the exception than the rule.

Absolutely true, IMO.

However, I think you're missing the point of why Wii Sports, Wii Play, Carnival,  Rayman Raving Rabbids and Red Steel did so well.  It's because they were *different* or at least played differently.  And as such, they were not just the same old thing in a new package.

Not that 'same old things in new packages' will not sell well.  Just that it becomes harder each time and more expensive.

Eventually, the flood of Carnival games will exceed the newness.  And newer new :) will need to be created.  Such as Wii Fit and what can be done with that.  Any 3rd parties now working on a game for that input device that can capture the imagination of game players?  We'll see in about 9m-2years.  And that company will be well rewarded for it, not caring that they are critisized for being faddishing new.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

Wouldn't it be nice to see high quality games like Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Call of Duty 4 on the Wii?

Alot of people seem to think that selling lots of hardware attracts 3rd parties. Wrong! It's all about attatchment rates and the Wii in that department is quite horrendous. And it is for that reason that the 360 is attracting lot's of 3rd parties.

Problem is, third parties are lazy and most of them produce subpar games, on a Sony or MS console they'll do alright because the rest of the library is mostly shovelware as well, but on a Nintey console they are going to get blown away by first party games, so they fear putting their titles on Nintendo consoles because they can't compete

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

You will see Crysis on the Wii in 2008, it will run at twice FPS of the fastest PC in existance.

End of '07 Sales:

Wii: 280 million
PS3: 3,450
Xbox360: 6,897

Wii fit will sell 4x the entire Playstation family game library combined by the end of its sales run.

The Wii will outsell every gaming system ever made combined by a ratio of 40:1.

SUPPPERRRR SAYA-JINNUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!

wii will start to get more support in 08 and 09 when it will have more then 50%of the market share

Wii wont get 50% marketshare. For that to happen it'll have to have reached the combined sales of the X360 and PS3... = Not gonna happen in 2008. Cuzz it ain't outselling the 2 systems combined in the most crucial time of the year (holiday season)... It'll keep floating at around 42-45% whilst the gap is widening between it's competitors.

Guys the wii has the LARGEST install base, its very dissapointing that 3rd party games are selling below 1M 1m on the wii for a 3rd party game is about 6% attach rate. Now add up all 3rd party games and its less than a 2% attach rate for wii 3rd parties.

I see you still haven't learned.

WHy the hell would people buy shit qaulity games?

3rd party efforts thus far have been very poor on wii compared to their PS3 and XBOX360 versions.

For example look what EA did to the sports series FIFA 08 Tiger Wood 08 Madden 08 NBA 08 all CRAP@!@!

I want those damn games but i am not willing to pay $100AU for shit. EA have to do much better for me to buy their games.

If 3rd parties put out none average ps2 ports that are a year old (in other words totally new games built on wii with effort put in) people will buy it.
