Forums - Sales - The importance of the DLC's. EA wants my money.

There'll come a day when you have to purchase DLC in order to gain access to the last level of a game.

I believe that's been an often talked about method to "curb piracy."

Make the last level of the game 10 dollars with a 1-time code to unlock the ending to those who buy it new.

I really don't get the huge fuss with dlc (in general), for a company that does it right (meaning it actually adds quite a bit of new content), it's really no different than an expansion, which have been around in gaming for a LONG time.

But, I will say, some companies are just dbags about it.  When I first looked at purchasing the Hot Shots Golf game for PS3 (I loved the past ones), I looked it up, and happened to notice that it seems like half of what should be included in the normal game is dlc...I don't mind dlc, but don't cut out of our normal game, add onto it.

Actually, I'm more disgusted by some of those "free" games that advertise the shit out of it being free, and essentially require you to pay to be successful.

Selling a game for $60 that isn't worth that much is worse. That's why copies end up in the used games store in the first place.

Companies could use DLC to reward people who keep their copies and don't sell them back. A new copy (at standard price) comes with a code that gives you access to all DLC that will be free of charge. People who buy used need an online pass to access all that free DLC. There, that's a much more consumer friendly solution which ultimately would benefit companies more than their current practices.

Thats exactly what EA does.....Thats what i was saying lol

No, EA charges for DLC. Their current online pass is only for online multiplayer functionality. Before DLC, EA would have put the content that is missing in Tiger Woods 12 on the disc at no additional cost, but today they are increasingly ripping off people in the hopes to increase their bottom line. If all DLC were to be free, then companies most likely wouldn't abuse it.

Your idea, is the same thing EA has done for the battlefield games, dante's inferno, dead space, and even mass effect and a ton more. They sell the special edition (which only last about a month) and then anything after does not include the free dlc. The online pass only affects people who buy used and even then it includes a free 2 day trial so that you can return the game before its a final purchase (all used games have a week long money back guarantee).

DLC is a joke all around. Maybe it didnt start out that way? Not sure what games used it first and for what. Anyways, its just like Mortal Kombat coming up with two people ad DLC already before its even out. People are paying for only part of a game and paying for more parts that should have and would have been in the game already in past gens. Its a huge shame really. But as long as a huge chunk of people are willing to pay it, it will never stop. Welcome to spending 50-60 on just part of a game and another 10-50 on the rest. It a shame to hear your misfortune, but not a surprise at all.

DLC used to be called expansion packs, which were really nice post-launch additions to gameplay adding a lot of new content for half the price of the original launch.

I dont mind small dlc packs like LBP's MGS4 pack and things like that. And even sponsored skins or new weapons as long as they weren't in the original blueprint of the game are fine. I'd buy a golden gun skin pack for GTA4 if they had it, because that would awesome. I just don't like things that should have been on disc that aren't or the shortcut add-ons that give you everything because you suck as a gamer.

And don't announced planned DLC till after a game launches. The MK DLC should offer more than two characters unless its 99 cents. And add characters requested by gamers.

Capcom did the same with MvsC3, before the game even came out they announced 2 downloadable characters. This policy is something I just don't get. £40 for a new game with not all the characters available for you, then £6 for 2 new characters that should have been included from the start.

If they had created them in 2 months time, since the game was launched, I wouldn't have an issue other then not buying them because £6 for 2 is a rip off, when it's just a small addition.

I bought the Dragon Age Origins Ultimate edition because it had everyone on it, all extra and in the end it only code me £25. You can get it even cheaper now.

Hmm, pie.

The special editions sell at a higher price than the regular editions of their games. I could be wrong, but I think that's the case. So the DLC you get for "free" is something you actually paid for, but I proposed that DLC should be free while games are still sold at standard price.

No, the special editions are 60$ and all copies of the game have "special edition" labeled on them until about a month. Take Dead Space 2 for example. PS3 owners that purchased the game early got the Special edition that included Dead Space Extraction as a download code. All ps3 copies of the game have dead space extraction till about a month or so and then you have to buy normal editions of the game. Used copies did not include extraction obviously.

See, i'd agree with everything EXCEPT the LBP thing.  Since LBP is a game that's supposed to be about creation.  If can release DLC packs, it means your editors suck.

It's why I regard Spore as a failure of a game.

Not to mention that DLC basically prevents proper mod tools from being released in a lot of cases, because... who's going to pay $19.99 for 5 new maps it took you a couple weeks to come up with when you can get all sorts of maps for free!

Expansion packs HAD to be expansion packs and bring new stuff because otherwise they would just be inferior to mods.
