Well, for somebody like me, the thing that made me have no doubt that I should go towards PS3 was the free online, as I think it is just wrong to have a subscription service to play online on a console.
Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.
I suppose that if the OP made a list of stupid mistakes Sony made with the PS3, one of them would be "Not pack a motion controller with the console". How can you hold a company accountable for not having something that companies brought to the market AFTER their product was released?
And charging for online is a mistake? It may be something some people don't agree with but it's a massive source of profit for M$. Look at the place M$ is in the market today and look at the position they were in with the Xbox 1. I think they did way more things right than they did wrong.
The hW - RROD.... Never had that problem but I always have the other one...'Open tray' problem.. I have to put my games like 20-30 times in my X360 before it wants to finally read them (check youtube it is full of vids about the open tray issue)..
And the lack of exclusives now..

Oh, I know its a huge source of profit, but I personally think they could have made just as much money (or more) by selling several million more consoles by having free online, leading to millions more in software sales, millions more in purchases on Xbox Live...it's a chain effect really.
I personally would have probably bought a 360 over a ps3 had the online been free, and I'm sure there's lots of others that are the same way.

Doing things to make a cheaper sku or using formats/technology that was already an industry standard may not have been.
