Holy crap, where's the punishment for doing the crime?

That video clip of Norway shows just how twisted some countries system's can be. I think even American prisons are too good. I'd say Chinese or other prisons are the kind of prison's murderers should be kept in!

Trying to make people behave properly through fear is incredibly primitive. In Norway, we generally see it so that a prison isn't a way to punish the prisoners, but a way to keep them away from harming the rest of society.

Most criminals are really just people who have had tough experiences in life. To think that punishing them will make them better people is a very strange way of thinking, really. The Norwegian way is to gradually build them up as people again, gradually giving them more freedom and such, untill they're people who can survive in the outside world.

Prisons shouldn't be a place to punish people who have had a troubled life, but a place to rehabilitate them. And here in Norway, they are.

Yeah, buthave it better over there then most people in my country. Something seems wrong wit that (plus, I don't see how they's be motivated to not commit crimes, when the punishment seems more like a vacation.

Punishing prisoners is a form of deterent. I actually know some criminals who got out of jail and didn't want to go back. Of course one of them was arrested a few weeks ago and is back in. But most non-homeless people do not want to go to jail. As such many would be criminals don't commit crimes to avoid going to jail.

Their has to be some sort of consequence to commiting crimes. If you do not punish anyone and the result of the crimes is a stay at an Island resort. Where is the lesson to be learned? Don't commit a crime or you'll have to go on vacation?

Since the earliest days of mankind their has been prison systems. It has always worked fairly well or it wouldn't still be in use. Norway is essentially ignoring thousands of years of proven methodalogy.

Now here in Canada, prisons are definatly not horrible. Prisoners do get to do most things normal people do. They get well cooked meals and are forced to take recovery classes. College educations, counsilling and therapy are all included to rehabilitate the criminals. But they are still kept in cell's not allowed internet access and are confined.

P.S- their are several murderers currently in British Columbia prison's who have openly said they will kill again as soon as they are released. Should these murderers who want to kill again be put on and island resort with tons of people and allowed to do what ever they please? One prisoner has killed like 2 fellow inmates already are you saying we should give him a place to live with more victims where he is free to work and do as he pleases?

Plus Norway thinking American Prison's violate criminal's human rights, how high on the hog does everyone deserve to live? Their better not be any homeless in Norway if thats the case because their living conditions would be below the quality of basic life. Heck my living here in Canada is inferior to that of that prison, in Norway the Government wouldn't let me live this poorly?

If Norwegian citizens live worse lifestyles then prisoners than the whole human rights thing is bull. Their is no way in any country that a prisoner who murdered, raped someone should live a higher quality of life then a citizen of that country. At worst case scenerio the prisoner should have the lifestyle of the worst citizen's in the country.

Edit: Lovely. VGChartz decided to delete all the quotes of you. I'll just add in what you said in italics.

Since the earliest days of mankind their has been prison systems. It has always worked fairly well or it wouldn't still be in use. Norway is essentially ignoring thousands of years of proven methodalogy.

Removal of freedom is a punishment in itself. Having no contact with the outside world for several years is quite bad.

There is a lesson learned. The lesson just isn't "Prison is bad. I don't like prison, so I won't break the law", it's "Doing what I did is bad, it hurts other people. I won't do that again". It's treating the cause of the problem, not ignoring the cause and controlling the person through fear.

They're not allowed internet access in Norway either. They're also either confined on islands or within walled areas. They're not allowed to freely walk around in society by any means. Confined doesn't have to mean put in a boring cell.

It seems you've completely misunderstood Norwegian prisons. They're still prisons, he doesn't live with innocent people. He lives with other prisoners, the guards and his tutors. And for the people who are a danger to the other prisoners, those are put in cells. Just cells with (a minimum of) 10 square meters, and a TV.

We give everybody who is unable to work a form of social security. They get more money than you need to live well above the quality of the people in our prisons. Of course, there are some (very few) homeless people, but that's because they've messed up their own lives completely, and don't accept help.

And your life isn't inferior to most Norwegian prisons. You have freedom. You're hugely underestimating that aspect.

They don't. The prisoners don't have a better lifestyle than the people outside. The video you saw is for the best prison, they're not all that good (although they're all close to as good).

You live under the impression that people in prison should have a horrible life. I don't think they do, nor does the Norwegian system. Sure, they may have done something horrible to someone, but you have to consider why they did it. Fixing the reason why they did it will help the person make himself a "proper" person again.

Now, our welfare state system could also be criticised. If you live in Norway, and try to work but end up with an injury, you're entitled to more money a year than many working people in, say, Poland, earn a year. There are some people who abuse that system, but the majority don't.

The Norwegian system is based on assuming people are fundamentally nice, and that they have a moral sense. You may call it naive, but it's definitely working. We have one of the lowest unemployment rates, if not the lowest, in the world.

Make a system where you expect the people to be nice, moral, proper people, and the vast majority will be nice, moral, proper people. Make a system where you expect everyone to exploit everything for their own benefit, and... well. That works for both citizens and prisoners in a country.

It seems to me that producing plastic/potato rice would be more expensive and resource intensive than actually just producing real rice.

More expesive, but less time intensive and less enviromentally taxing.

China has been moving to try and wean people off rice and move them to Potatoes because Potatoes take much less water to grow.  It takes 1,900 liters to grow 1kg of rice... and only 500 liters to grow 1kg of Potatoes.  So it's a safer crop to avoid droughts

Additionally Rice farming takes many many hours of expert manpower... the more and more you alter your fields the higher yield... it's not uncommon for rice farmers to spend 8 hours on individual family sized field  while potatoes you stick in the ground and you have at most 2 hours work for a regular family sized farm.

Apparently China has been trying to move away from rice and too potatoes because of drought hitting a lot of their farmland... along with other reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was part of their misplaced idea to wean people off rice.

Potatoes are a surprisingly interesting product by the way.

For example, there introduction into europe singlehandedly lowered civilian deaths from wars to drop by something like 75% since unlike native crops they were useless as war rations... so farmers afterwords were  encouraged to always plant a "war field" of potatoes to get their family through incase of war and soldiers stealing all their grain.
