Trying to make people behave properly through fear is incredibly primitive. In Norway, we generally see it so that a prison isn't a way to punish the prisoners, but a way to keep them away from harming the rest of society. Most criminals are really just people who have had tough experiences in life. To think that punishing them will make them better people is a very strange way of thinking, really. The Norwegian way is to gradually build them up as people again, gradually giving them more freedom and such, untill they're people who can survive in the outside world. Prisons shouldn't be a place to punish people who have had a troubled life, but a place to rehabilitate them. And here in Norway, they are. |
Yeah, buthave it better over there then most people in my country. Something seems wrong wit that (plus, I don't see how they's be motivated to not commit crimes, when the punishment seems more like a vacation.
