Forums - Gaming - Molyneux: Next Fable Should Amaze Gamers

CVG

Update: To be 100% clear, Peter did NOT announce or refer to "Fable 4" at any stage during CVG's interview, but discussed his ambitions for the next step in the franchise. Things be getting twisted.

Lionhead boss (and BAFTA Fellow) Peter Molyneux has admitted that Fable 3 couldn't compete with the industry's best on a technological level - but pledged that the franchise's next instalment should "amaze" its audience.

Speaking to CVG in an interview looking back over his 27 years in games, Molyneux said he personally took review scores of Fable 3 to heart.

The game has accrued a very healthy average Metacritic of 80 - but it's a score which is nine points behind its predecessor.

"I totally blame myself, not anyone upstairs, who all did a wonderful job," he said. "[After Fable 2's reception] my expectations were sky high. The planning was the problem. We had to look at the process."

He added: "I think we took Fable 3 and realised it wasn't quite up-to-date with [the best modern games] and that we need to go forward. But the great thing about Fable is there's nothing quite like it out there. There's nothing wrong with FPS games, but they are what they are - their currency is what they blow up. Our currency is this beautiful charming dramatic world that has different things in it every day."

When asked what he wanted to achieve with his next Fable game, he added: "I have a very clear idea where Fable will go in the future. Trying to be diplomatic, I think that whatever we do next with Fable, we should just amaze people with the quality.

"If we go on, we're not just going to make another Fable, we're going to make something that stands head and shoulders up with anybody else out there - the best of the best - in terms of its technology, its drama and its storytelling."

Molyneux was inaugurated into the BAFTA Fellowship on Wednesday evening. In an emotional speech, he thanked his colleagues, publishing partners, family and the press.

wasnt falble 2 supposed to do that. then 3?

i know what fable 4 is going to have. something inspired from a jrpg, and a remade inventory system. as well as little tweaks here and their.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

Molyneux is a joke.  "admitted that Fable 3 couldn't compete with the industry's best on a technological level".   You silly old man, It's not the technological level that is the problem with Fable! Fable looks graphically great.

I liked, even loved, Fable 2 but I haven't played Fable 3 to be honest but it just looks so badly designed. Has anyone here seen Angry Joe's Top 32 Reasons Fable III Sucks?

Just look at that farting. I'm about to puke. I know it was in Fable 2 as fell and I hated it but it seems he's doing it even a bigger thing in F3 and it's just so STUPID and disgusting! And that meaningless "hold hands" mechanics. Laughably pretentious and laughably meaningless for gameplay.

I'm going from a being past Molyenux hater to a period of Molyneux lover (yeah, for a few years I bought his bs he spewed from his mouth) to a period of Molyneux hater again.

I'm not proud that MS has got the Fable franchise anymore.

I was kinda disappointed with Fable 3. I liked the idea of a Sanctuary but the mechanics felt wrong, and not being able to die, just get knocked out and get a scar take excitement out of the game. I am not going to get hyped for next Fable game, otherwise I'll wind up being disappointed again.
