Forums - General - VN resolution..Green light for NO FLY zone..

I just hear it on the news, waiting for a News article about it to post here..

Anyway  possible UK/France and USA can bomb Khaddafi's troops in a few hours from now;.

BBC:

The UN Security Council has backed a resolution on Libya that supports a no-fly zone and "all necessary measures" to protect civilians.

Meeting in New York, the 15-member body agreed "to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas under threat of attack".

It also supported a no-fly zone to help halt the advance of Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces.

Reports suggest air strikes may begin within hours of the resolution passing.

The US, UK and France proposed the council resolution, backing action short of an invasion. It passed 10-0 with five abstentions.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, introducing the resolution, said: "In Libya, for a number of weeks the people's will has been shot down... by Colonel Gaddafi who is attacking his own people.

"We cannot let these warmongers do this, we cannot abandon civilians."

He added: "We should not arrive too late."

Russia and China - which often oppose the use of force against a sovereign country as they believe it sets a dangerous precedent - abstained rather than using their power of veto.

Earlier reports suggested that if the resolution was passed, air attacks on Col Gaddafi's forces by the British and French air forces could begin within hours.

From what I hear, RAF and France are sending planes in now.

Resolution states that any nation may take any action to stop Quadaffi, sans landing troops. Vote passed 10-5 with the major players abstaining like China and Russia. I guess the French UN ambassador told the Chinese off, mentioning them supressing the Jasmine Revolution.

I'm still not sure if I'm for this. If the UK, France, ect want to intervene, that is fine, but I think the US should of stayed out of it.

Libya's oil supply has already been cut off/destroyed. Its not going to make a difference now, IMO.

I figured that was their only option. While the rebels were winning, it was merely a matter of letting them win, but once it turned around, it looked really bad on the West to let them suffer

We'll see if the rebels can retake the initiative if the infrastructural playing field is level

Something tells me that in 24 hours, he won't have the capability to throw it into the sea.

That's for them to decide.

My problem is that (from my view) Europe constantly complains about what America does in terms of interventionism, but never will take the lead in doing anything like this, unless we do it first. For once, I'd like the US to let the Europeans handle it and see how easy it is.
