I see what you're saying but if there's even a slight chance we're in danger it must be reported. |
you are not in frigging danger..................
There is no chance at all and still they keep talking about it.

*phew* that's a relief! Glad we have a radiation specialist on this site. :D
(joking)
Seriously though I see your point but there's only so much to be said about Japan. Everyone knows about it and donations are rapidly coming in. I guess this is the new issue people (or at least the news) is concerned about.
Australian media is bad in over exaggerating everything but not at US levels, why is it that the US media think everyone is so stupid and will believe that crap.
US should start offering Hec's to its population (low interest loans for University courses which you pay back once you start earning set amount) then the news reporters can go get an education.

Man this guy is screwy. If the reactor melts down and the winds blow inland. Most of Japan will be effected by radiation. Of course the Government isn't going to freak out Tokyo, what are they going to say? This guy says to tell everyone to evacuate, to where exactly? Almost all of Japan will be effected if the wind flows right. What is the Government supposed to say "Everyone get out of Japan"?
The Japanese Government is trying to maintain calm, of course the television isn't going to be over whelmed with "Your doomed videos", Japan doesn't want massive panic in an already chaotic situation.
What good would it do to tell all of Tokyo "You might get radiation poisoning if you live in Japan" What would the people do? Maybe run like hell out of Tokyo, then what?
The Japanese Government is getting ready to react to the crisis. Its almost a guarantee that the plant will melt down. The staff were all evacuated and a suicide mission was launched yesterday in which the television said the employees were rushing to certain death to try and prevent the meltdown.
What does this guy want exactly? Anybody with half a brain sees that the plant is 98% likely to melt down. What do you do in that situation. You try to calm people down, maintain order and react as quickly as possible to minimalize the damage.
You don't go blaring on loud speakers, "Your all going to be effected by radioactive fallout".

Why do you ask when you answered it yourself?

I haven't heard of inability to farm, but I heard only last year of some sheep in Dorset being considered 'unfit for human consumption' due to the contamination from Chernobyl. |
Bit off trail of the actual subject of the thread but I still find this and what NotStan said rather hard to believe. It sounds like excuses and fear talk in motion.
In the case of the land, must of East Anglia cannot be used due to flooding from the sea (salt water), there are also 2 nuclear power stations located in East Anglia both of which have farm land round them. Also, while fallout did reach the UK, it wasn't that much, not enough to contaminate fields (or sheep) for 20 years after.
As for the sheep, unless they came from the area of Chernobyl recently and imported, I highly doubt sheep could be contaminated by Chernobyl fallout. Sheep only live for around 12 years, how they would have been contaminated in just Dorset beyond me.
Although I'm not argueing you didn't read it. All sounds weird to me. Using a major incident to explain something else. But hey, who knows, maybe the fall out did effect the land and sheep in this way in the UK. Just as well that we continue to support and invest heavily in Ukraine's farming, where we get a lot of exports from.
Hmm, pie.

because if i said the US is full of Stupid people(nor am i saying they are now), Someone might feel outraged and i get an ban so i have to say it in an questionable way so i am not calling people in the US stupid.

They are everywhere, in all countries.
You just need to change "full" to "a lot" so you don't get banned for stating facts :)

Don't they realize that for that level of radiation to cross the ocean the whole japan island would have to be fried and become an irradiated wasteland ??? For god sake, stop looking at your navel..... You'll get10 times more radiation sitting in California from doing a catscan than you will ever get from potential radiations clouds coming from Japan.......... |
I think you've overlooked the reasons for reporting in this way. Well for one, news networks generally report news that will be relevent to the target demographic and you make it relevent by looking at risks to citizens of the country watching it - After all, who worries about the starving children in africa on a daily basis?
Your point is actually wrong too. Radiation travels with air currents mostly. So if it was blown to california, then Japan would be completely in the clear. Not sure about news where you are but here in the UK the news networks have been quite clear and concise with their evaluation and not spinning stuff to make it overly relevent to the UK population.

I remember watching a documentry about 10-12 years ago that talked about the effect of chernobyl fallout on land and animals in east anglia. The whole documentry wasn't just about that but mostly regarding it's effects in the UK.
If I'm honest, I remember thinking what a load of bullshit. It used lots of emotive skewed statistics to hint that there "might" be a problem because of it etc etc etc.
