I heard a nuclear power plant exploded in Japan, although it doesn't look like as serious as it may sound, its still serious.

Yah I just read their was an explosion at one of the Nuke plants, last I heard on BBC, CTV and CBC was that the area had been evacuated and they were trying to prevent a meltdown at the reactor but I guess an explosion indicates they aren't having that much success.

I wonder if the explosion was a full blown meltdown or just caused by them trying to cool the reactor. I guess we'll probably find out tomorow.

Apparently this is a very old nuclear plant, not one of the safest designs...

The explosion i think was the reactor walls collapsing. Bad, but not Chernobyl yet

so was the quake an 8.8 or 8.9? I keep seeing different reports saying one or the other.

.2 or .3 more then everyone else, thats quite a bit stronger then I expected if true.

Anyways, anyone hear about any groups going to Japan, similar to Haiti, to help out? I'd definitely consider signing up and going to help.

I just emailed my church asking if we will be sending an aid team, or if the church knows of a team I could go with if their is a relief team the church is aware of going to Japan. I know that Canada has put the army on stand by and has a couple PRT and search and rescue teams on standby. But according to our Government Canada is waiting for Japan to ask for our help, were offering but until Japan specifically asks these teams will be on stand by.

I know the Red Cross is sending volunteers but I don't know what the qualifications are. I'm guessing the Peace Corps will also be sending people to Japan. Those are the only two non-Christian organisation's I've heard are possibly sending teams. Then World Vision is also definatly going to be sending a team they always do.

Their should be quite a few teams, my family themselves think I should wait till next year before going. They think if I go now I won't be of much use. But I'd like to be a part of the reconstruction effort and helping the displaced and the people who have been left with nothing.

I plan on going on some sort of relief team to Japan as soon as possible, as late as two years if I can't do one immediatly!

The whole situation is straight up dreadful - if you are willing to donate to speed up the country's recovery, then by all means - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=125820&page=1&str=1328844876# . I've orgainized most of the good ways to do so in there.
