Forums - Sony - FW 3.60 brings cloud storage for save games to PSN Plus

Well, it also helps with copy protected saves (Demon's Souls) and saves that would disable trophies when copies (Uncharted).

But that begs the question of why those were an issue in the first place.

Really, this is not cloud storage at all.  It is merely as Sony labeled it: online storage of saved games.  It's simply a folder via which you can manually store your saves online, and each save file must be uploaded individually.

It's a feature I appreciate and will make use of, but it's a far cry from Steam's cloud saving functionality.

Yeah I kinda agree.  It'll be amazing if further on down the road if Sony does implement REAL cloud storage but either way this is awesome and a safe, way to back up saved files just incase something bad happens to them.  I know since I'm a Plus subscriber I'm gonna back up all my saves for sure.

The guy that posted this on the PS Blog has responded to commenters asking for things like auto-copying and whatnot, and he said they'll look into them, and that they plan to update the feature over time:

Can't you back up game saves on a USB stick?

No, because of trophies.

I'm very happy about this sony, my psn  (whoops no plus signs lol) account just became a hell of a lot more important to me. As someone with a 60GB model from early 2007, hardware failures and the data loss from them have been weighing on my mind for awhile.

Just not protected ones.

Yes, you can. But some saves are still copy protected.

Apparently most of these older saves can still be backed up to the Sony cloud server while some won't copy. It will be interesting to find which game saves don't work for this feature.

Still it's nice to have. I back up almost all of my important saves to a USB stick now. The copy protected saves I haven't bothered with backing up regularly because the only way to do that is run an entire PS3 system backup to an external hard drive. And that takes hours.

Aha!  So this IS cloud storage!  It jsut has to be implemented per game.

From Joystiq:

Future titles will offer the ability to save directly to PSN, Sony says, bypassing your local HDD entirely.

This makes sense, given when news of 3.60 was first leaked a month or so back, the leak-ee said it would be up to the developer to imlpement the feature.

I hope they make it mandatory.

Edit:

It's time's like this I wish we could update thread titles.  Making a new thread for this seems totally redundant, but I guarantee most people who read this thread won't see this post.

Awesome, that certainly gives me hope. Now we just need developers to start using it, and using it alot!
