So is the battery pack a replacement battery (inner) or an attachment to the back of your 3DS?

Looks like attachment.

:(

The 3DS battery looked like a regular Li-ion battery (like the ones in cell phones) - Why couldn't they make one to fit inside a 3DS with something better than 1300mAh (current 3DS capacity)

It's likely has to do with heating.

You just can't stuff a large battery into a small machine and expect it not to melt your hands.

Around the Network

Its a huge disgusting chunk of cheap plastic, no thanks.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

For those who are as confused as I was, Kotaku has an explanation.

"Nyko has sent along a picture of the Power Pak attatched to a 3DS. The unit comes with a special tool to unscrew the back of the 3DS, and replaces the standard battery."

This could be useful, assuming it makes it over here. It looks like it doesn't add too much extra bulk judging by the picture above...
