I agree with the court's decision, and when the next Westboro fuckwad dies, I hope as many people as possible will exercise their First Amendment rights to turn the funeral into a total circus.

No.  We can't treat these people like that.  Even if they refuse to show others such curteousy, we should be respectful of them.  Fighting them with their own tactics will only make them dig in deeper.  Showing them kindness, no matter how undeserved, may make some of them start to rethink their stance.

The best thing we can do, for families of fallen soldiers, for the misguided people of the Westboro church, and for our own sanity, is to simply ignore these people.  They thrive on the attention, on the hatred.  It makes them feel powerful, righteous. Now that this matter is settled, let them do their thing.  If we stop making such a big deal of it, they'll fade away in time.

Bull. That only works in cutsy movies. Live and let die I say!!!

And ignoring them is pretty hard, especially when they choose to harass emotionally vulnerable people, who'll have a hard time ignoring the ignorant mob saying terrible things about their recently decesed loved one.

They are ignorant and stupid, yes, but so are we, for giving them a platform to preach their hate.  As long as people pay so much attention to what they do, they will continue to do it.  Giving them a spot on national news is exactly what they want.  The want the world to hate them, becaue they think they are above everyone else. I say pay them no mind.  They've chosen to be ignorant and hateful, and for that, they should be ingored.  They aren't going out killing people...if they start doing so they should of course be dealt with.  But as of now they only have words.  Words can be ignored. Our best defense against hate is tolerance.

Hate Speech is still Free Speech. The only time it's no longer Free Speech is when it becomes slander or dangerous for either a civilizen or the republic.

The Justice Alito (thanks for that) picked a feeble legislation to try to get around Free Speech though. Unless it could be proven that Westboro Church were intentionally publicizing a private citizen with intent on simply publicizing... oh snap!

^_^ Kind of sobering knowing we have guys like him in the chair though, I almost have hope for American democracy again.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

This is more about Hate speech than free speech, there is a big difference ..

Hate speech is a largely made up and subjective construct.

Alito dissented on the grounds that the Snyder family aren't public figures and have a right to bury their own in peace.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't cemetaries public places? If not, why the heck are the owners of these cemetaries having these people arrested for tresspassing. Alito fails on this one, like it or not, groups like the Westboro church have the right to protest (peacefully of course) anybody they choose.

Can anyone please be a dear and sum up the issue that has gone to court in laymans terms and as brief as possible? I'd be forever indebted to you.

Soldiers Die in war.

Church Members stand on the street outside cemetarys, picket and hold signs that say they deserve to die.  I think because of gay people.

People sued because they didn't like this group harrassing people who's family has just died... for something that's really really not related.

The courts ruled that while these people are giant doucehbags... you can't make it illegal for people to simply taunt someone else unless they cross over into threats or inciting threats.
