Forums - General - Help on new TV

I want to ask you for advice as I plan to buy a new TV and am lost in the product portfolio complexity of LG and Samsung.

I want to buy a 46 or 47 inch LCD or LED TV. 3D is not a must, but a nice to have and the TV should be around €1000, with lower always being better.

So, any advice?

What I heard is that LED has better white/black and energy usage than LCD but has clouding sometimes, whereas LG 3D seems to be worse than Samsung 3D. But otherwise, I am confused.

Your help would be highly appreciated.

Waiting is not an option, as you can always wait with TVs, the way they are moving.

Right now is actually a good time to buy as 2011 models are coming in so 2010s are on sale.

I can get a 60 inch 1080p LG plasma for 1299 canadian dollars.

I'm sure you can find similar deals in the UK as well.

Unless you are some professional videophile, pretty much any TV you get will be the best TVs in your household so just look for the best price and basic features. Size, resolution, contrast, refresh rate...etc.

Do stay away from 3D though unless you don't mind spending 300 dollars more for same model which includes inferior 3D technology.

Can't go wrong with Samsung. My parents bought a 55" Samsung last summer and it looks great.

I'd get a 50 inch LG plasma. The LG 50PK950N for only 1000 Euros. (at least that's the model name here in Europe, dunno what it is called in NA)

Best bang for your buck.

Here is the best bang for your buck right now in USA.

Anyone looking for a big screen TV, lives in the states and passes on this...needs to go hang out with Charlie Sheen in the looney bin

I have a 47" LG LED TV and I love it. I got it on sale for $1,199.00 about 6 months ago. It took me a while to finally decide on the LG instead of a similar Samsung, but you really can't go wrong with either brand if you go for an LED. I'm not so sure about which makes the better 3D TV, but I'd steer clear until the technology matures a little more anyway. I don't see LCDs holding alot of value in the next year or so, so if you decide to get a 3D TV later on you'll be better off trading in an LED. Hope this helps.

NOTE: I haven't had any issues with clouding either.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

After a lot of research, I was torn between LED TV's from LG and Vizio (yes, Vizio).  I went with the Vizio because of the bonus features but I can't help but wonder what that LG would look like in my house.  If possible, don't settle for less than 120 Hertz but try to go for 240.  LED's look good but when you discover that the LED was turned off (or some power saving mode was turned on) and you turn the lighting on, you will jizz in your pants.

My advice, go to Best Buy or something, look at all of the TV's side by side, and listen to what the clerks say.  From my experience, those guys REALLY know what they're talking about.  Or you could just listen to disolitude.  He tends to have good info on such things.

*edit* Looks at disolitude's link*  600hz!?  $1300!? HOLY SHIT!!  Get that TV!!

For the record, Plasma probably always looks better than LCD's, even LED LCD's but I have a mental phobia about their reliability.
