if i have a usb charger for my DS, can i use it for my 3DS then? basically does the DS charger charge the 3DS?

The charger is the same as for the DSi.

Depends on the DS model. The DSi/DSi XL charger works fine on the 3DS, the DS Lite charger doesn't work on the DSi/DSi XL/3DS. I'm not sure about original DS as I don't have one of those. ;-p

You should do a test to see how long the battery lasts. That's one thing that worried many. Running it until it's dead is healthy anyway ;)
