This kind of system should be initiated here in the U.S and the United Mexican States or at least require people to show ID when purchasing M rated games.

As I understand it, it's 'banned' because they cannot classify it under their current rating system. so it can't be sold, imported etc.

A system requiring ID before would be good though, even though it's a lame protection because i could just go and buy a copy for my lil bro no problem.

If games in AU were rated to 18 this wouldn't be a problem, but theres some in gvt. there who think games are for kids, nevermind the fact that the main buyers are in the 25-35 year old bracket

Incorrect, they think that kids can get the games. I am in a retail store and that is the official word, which is bollocks. It is not the retailers fault that these games get given to the youngster, the games have clear markings and every store who sells items with ratings is legally bound to have the classifications explanations on show in their store.

The foundings are outdated and need to be modernised.

I agree 100% with the bolded, but which part was incorrect - my understanding of the ratings only going to 16 or that they think games are for kids? not being an ass, i just want to know

Nah the major concern is that the kids can apparently get the games.

Brendan O’Connor, the Home Affairs Minister, has told GameSpot that he is interested in introducing an R18 game rating in July.

The Standing Committee of Attorneys-Generals (SCAG) was initially going to decide whether Australia should have the rating on March 4. However, NSW Attorney-General John Hatzistergos has ruled out attending the upcoming SCAG meeting, possibly due to the looming NSW state election. Therefore, the decision cannot be held in March.

But O’Connor believes that the March meeting would be a good time for ministers to examine the new guidelines and make a more concrete decision on how to proceed with the R18 issue. He also claims that a vote for the new guidelines is a vote for a new R18 rating.

there is hope though

what a joke. You got more insects, spiders and all sorts of killer venomous animals and reptiles but yet you can't play a violent video game. Yes it does make the country look like there is a bunch of pussies in control. I would lose it over there.

Mark that on the map, Australia easiest country to take over. they would just ban the army from the training of violent behavor to anything that would help them protect there country.

You gamers need to unit and  do something.

Yes but we risk an $1100 fine if we get caught. Although I've never heard of anyone geting caught.

Why would you want a rating system that takes content not appropriate for 15 year olds but appropriate for adults and bans it? You live in a nation which has some of the best laws protecting free speech meaning oppresive rating systems like the one we have in Australia are unconstitutional.

Yes having kids provide ID for adult rated games would be good (not teen rated games as its stupid to assume 13 year olds have ID) but it should come as a response to people putting pressure on game distributors to stop rather than allowing the government to gain further control over free speech. Cause after they get video games they will come for movies and music.

Looks like I'll be getting this as an UK import then... Ah well, shit happens, and yet they still are not gonna introduce the R18 rating.
