Lets take a look back at gaming history and see if history will repeat itself.

 My personal experience.

I owned the Sega Gen when most people around me owned a SNES.  Tho Gen dint technically win it was compettive to the end.

I owned a Playstation not the very populat N64.  At the time the N64 console was the big new thing but the PS won out.

I owned a PS2 and was told by many of my friends I should of bought a xbox because it was so much better, but once again I won out and they all enede up buying ps2.

I now own a ps3 and most people i know own a 360, will i get lucky and will history repeat itself or did i choose wrong this time.

 

Another point I would like to make.

The most pwerful system seems to lose.  The N64 was more powerful and it lost.  The xbox was more powerful and it lost.  The ps3 is more powerful will it lose?

In the battle between PS and N64 alot if it came down to storage.  The PS won thanks to using disc being able to store more for a chaper cost.

Will the ps3 win because its blue-ray  can hold more than 360 hd-dvd?

 

Will history repeat itself?

 

I'm confused, at no point in time was the N64 or XBox more popular than the Playstation or PS2; and there certainly was no point when the N64 sales doubled the Playstation's sales for over a year, or the XBox was ahead in sales by over 7 Million units.

No.. History won't repeat itself.. I don't see a pattern at all, you like Sony systems and don't like the ones Nintendo makes. The PS3 will come in last place this generation, but it still should have some great games coming out for it.

can it repeat itself it certainly can but will it? time will tell... i will say this though.. if the ps3 can perform like this with such a lack of software( like naysayers like to say) then what happens when the library gets bigger.. sony pr starts making less mistakes and online offering gets better?? you cant say sales are gonna get worse.... i think im gonna hear someone say "hey you know what sony is doing such a good job this year compared to last year i might look into gettin a ps3 now"

When the xbox came out it was behind in sales but it was the new machine and it was more powerful and had better graphics. I remember reading reviews that claimed multi plat games were best on xbox and told by so many people i should have goten one. Many early adopters of the ps2 who dint kno if they would see light yet kno what I am tlkaing about.

So what you're saying is that people who are easily impressed by graphics believe that the graphical advantage their system of choice has will lead it to selling better but in reality the system that is selling well will continue to sell well even though its graphics may be far worse ...

Well then I would agree, that is how this generation will turn out

Don't forget history doesn't always repeat itself, times change, people change people don't always stick to Videogames and that area, alot of things influence changes in that type of way.

Wii will win this gen and it's not for any reason that a system won in the past. They will win because they have something that no one else has and it's something completely new and revolutionary. Every other generation the systems were basically just more powerful with more storage. Now Nintendo has put in motion controls and created a novel experience. You can't out process that.

Actually, the N64 and Xbox were much more powerful than their Playstation competitor.  As evidenced by it's name, the N64 ran on a 64-bit processor, whereas the PS1's was 32-bit.  The reason PS1 seemed more powerful was because of the storage space--technically, Final Fantasy 7 had the potential to look much better on the 64 if they had space on the 32mb cartridges to store all the extra textures/lighting effects/cutscenes.  Also, Xbox and PS2 had no comparison, graphically.  The Reason that Ninja Gaiden and Riddick (best-looking games last-gen) were Xbox-exclusive was because the competition couldn't handle them.

Powerful and popular are not the same thing.

It's been said to death that the most powerful console has never won.

 In fact, look at it this way:

Right now, there are 5 current-gen pieces of gaming hardware.

Powerwise: PS3>360>Wii>PSP>DS

However, saleswise: DS>PSP=Wii(most powerful handheld/least powerful console)>360>PS3

The part of HappySqurriel's post you highlighted and your reply led me to believe that you have missread "popular" as "powerful"... 

 

 

XD whoops!!  You are right, I did misread that.  U can't blame me tho--I wrote that after midnight after not sleeping last night :)

 

@PDF: Yes.  Like I said, right now, saleswise, DS>PS3=Wii>360>PS3.  This would seem to show that the least powerful consoles (or handhelds) sell the most.
