While we're speaking of reading.

Who here has moved to e-books ?

I have been a hard core book collectors for years with close to 1500 scifi/fantasy books in my collection and then I got a kindle 10 months ago.

Since then I haven't purchased a single paper book and I am actually reading a lot again ( purchased and read 35 e-books or so in 10 months while I was down to reading 8-9 books a year before that).

The thing that really rocks with the kindle is the spur of the moment purchase. I used to buy books as they were released, especially  in case of series as I never knew if I would be able to find them later on. And when i wanted to read a new book I would look at my backlog and have to decide what to read next.

Now when I finish a book I can get and start reading any book I want within 60 seconds, so I get to read what i feel like reading at that time, not what I purchased 2 years earlier........

One thing I had never done before (except for LOTR) is that e-books are cheap enough that I find myself repurchasing old books I had and rereading them again....

I LOVE MY KINDLE !!!

I have a Nook and I just got The Wife a Nook Color for Valentine's Day and we're both hooked.  I love my bookshelf and my book collection...but it just takes so much space. On top of that, packing and moving my massive collection of books is always one of the hardest things to do.  I'll miss growing my book collection but the reality is I only have so much space and my Nook takes care of that nicely.  I have about 30 books on it with room for thousands more before needing to expand the memory and it takes up the space of a notebook.

The one thing that does bother me though is The Wife and I can't share books back and forth.  There are some books I can lend her for two weeks, but not every book and even that is a pain.  Even when I'm through with the book I can't give it to her to read like I would a normal book so I'm probably just going to rip the DRM from all my eBooks.

Can't you tie both nooks to the same account and only purchase books on one account ?

Or switch her nook to your account if she wants to read one of your book and then switch it back to hers ? ( I know it's possible with the kindle, as we have two here too).

Funny thing is Erikson is canadian.....

Although if you are reading Toll the hounds it's not like you were ready for Crippled God, you still have to go through Dust of Dreams after that and that's a massive book.

Question to all those with iPads, Kindles or whatever... does it get hard on the eyes after reading for an hour or is it much better than reading from a computer screen?

Not with the Kindle.

Should be the same with the Sony reader, not sure which technology the Nook uses.

The main reason is those two do not have a  backlight. Basically if there is no light in the room, you can't see the screen ( but you can read on the beach with no reflections issues). The drawback being you need a bedside lamp to read in bed...

The Ipad is like traditional computer screens though so it should tire your eyes after a while...

Honestly despite all the marketing by Apple the Ipad is not a good e-book reader. It's a little too heavy for my taste, you can't hold it in one hand, and it tires your eyes and has limited battery life...And personally I hate having to touch the screen to turn a page.

The only thing I like on the Ipad is the way it presents your book collection which is a tonn better than the Kindle ) no color isn't an issue when reading the book but it would be nice to see the books covert in color).

It's about the same size  as Toll the Hounds, and I chewed through at least a quarter of that today.

I just

I enjoy these books so much

No, an account may only be active on a single nook, it sucks.

There are two types of nooks: the regular nook and the nook Color.

The nook uses the eInk just like the Kindle and the nook Color is more like an iPad (and even becomes a competent tablet when jailbroken).  For anyone that has never seen eInk, go to Barne's and Noble now and look at their eInk nooks.  I'm not saying buy a nook if you want an eReader, just look at the eInk.  It's pretty amazing.  It looks exactly like paper and there's no eye strain what-so-ever.  The only issue is if there's a light shining directly on it, there can be a small glare.

The nook Color uses a touch screen similar to the iPad and I was worried about eye strain on that too but apparently it's not bad.  My wife has been using it and she has had no complaints.  I haven't used it for long periods of time so I can't speak anything about it.
