Forums - Sales - Is the Kinect boost to the Xbox 360 an illusion?

Kinect sales are somewhat responsible for Xbox's surge during the holidays, but less than most people think.

People forget the obvious fact that Xbox 360 ALWAYS rises during the holiday season, as do the other consoles.

Plus, you've got Call of Duty: Black Ops, a new Halo game, and a much better value and better designed 360 model. So you have many people rebuying their consoles (I'm not too proud to say I'm one of those people, and I know a few others who did as well). Those are the main reasons for the 360's sales going up during the holidays.

The Kinect 360 boost is VASTLY overstated. Are people really going out and spending $300 to place another Dance game and a Wii Sports knockoff? I highly doubt it..

According to Pachter/ect, the NPD January results stated that 60% of all Xbox 360's sold during the month in the US were with Kinects. Make of it what you will, but that is an insane number.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

All im going to say is this:

3/5ths of all Xbox 360s bought increased in price by $100. That means $200M increase in hardware revenue alone for just the month of January in just the U.S.A. without even bothering to count standalone sales and software. If any company could spend $500M and increase sales by that much they would do it in a heart beat if they could. As far as im concerned anyone who reads Malstrom and supports the screwed up deranged things that he says is also deranged by association.

Tease.

It never ceases to amaze me how passionately people here defend a hardware add on. I just look at those games and, I cannot understand it.. Boggles the mind.

I mean do people here really WANT games like that? Or to play games without a controller?

You can't understand that people have different tastes in games?  And yes, people WANT games like that, 8 million have already got one.  It's not for you, who cares?  I don't want one now but I won't downplay its success or say crap like it's sales will fall to obscurity.

Yep, I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I bought Kinect. I like Kinect Sports but mostly bought it because of the issue of not having games more then two people can interact with. So if I have a group of friends over they are always down to play Kinect.  It's a good party add on. I also had my mom buy it after she tried it and my uncle and aunt. Both never play video games and nore did they buy wii. So it is reaching the audience and from the looks of it at wal-mart today they are having a hard time keeping up with orders.

However as far as selling to existing customers I would have to say that it's mostly selling to new customers. I always see stand alone Kinect units and maybe a few non Kinect bundled xbox 360 units but never Kinect 360  units.  So they need to up production on 360 Kinect units. I don't now about EMEAA but in USA it is selling out still and it's feb. So hopfully by march they can catch up with demand. I can't ever Find Kinect 360 units and I live near chicago.  I look all the time just for conversation but will take pics to prove my points in the future as I always get told it's all anecdotal evidence. Which is still true but atleast I got one pic, rather then non.

I can't believe that he defends the GC 1.5 that Nintendo released...

A couple of things:

  • From what I understand, the $500 million is the entire marketing budget, not the Kinect marketing budget.
  • Selling the console isn't where the bulk of the money is made.  Kinects cost next to nothing to make.  Also, game sales are where consoles make their money.  It's the "Razor blade" model.  You lose money on the "razor" and make money on the "blades".
  • Without the marketing, new re-design, and Kinect, who's to say how bad 360 sales would be?  Certainly not as good as they are, now.   It would probably be like the other consoles on the market--at a decrease for the year.
  • It said in the article that M$'s increase was 1,148,500 consoles over a set period of time where it could have been 1,666,666 if they'd just taken their marketing money and bought 360's with it over the same period of time.  It's not like 360 sales are going to suddenly stop.  With the money spent marketing, I can only assume that more people are aware of 360's and Kinect and more consoles will sell in the future as a result.  Spending a large amount of money now to make more money later--that's how businesses work, right?  I guess Coca Cola shouldn't have advertised at the Superbowl.  Instead, they should have taken their millions of dollars and bought Coca Cola with it.  That way, sales would improve because they bought their own.......no.  That's fucking retarded.

And the thing is if MS did in fact buy those consoles, where would word of mouth be, word of mouth can be much more powerful than simply advertising see wii for one of the best cases in a long long time.

well, since I actually work at a video game department at a Best Buy and see people doing that exact thing several times a day, I have to tell you that you should probably stop doubting it ;)

As I though, copy and pasting a flaming article is much easier and has more posts than when I did a well though article myself. What a shame.

LOL! You posted a Malstrom article on a non Malstrom site! You should of known how this was going to turn out! It's like being black going to a KKK rally. Whatever happens it's your fault for doing it.
