Forums - Gaming - What is it that people have against Sonic games?

basically 2d sonic games were very good and every single 3d sonic game has sucked or at the very best been mediocre. i don't see why sega doesn't get the hint and make a sonic game in 2d style with awesome 3d graphics like smash bros. That way you can still have gorgeous 3d graphics but the great 2d gameplay of back when sonic games were something other than something to frown at. the whole premise behind the sonic games just doesn't work in 3D. here's hoping for the next sonic game to be from a smash bros viewpoint on the wii, i mean heck, even mario went back to some classic 2d gaming in mario galaxy for some parts.

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

Firstly of all, there is little wrong with either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2. Both were excellent games that pleased most Sonic fans around the time of their release. Sonic Adventure pretty much blew me away when I first played it and remained enjoyable to this day.

Secondly, 2D Sonic games were not "all about speed". So many people make it sound like all you have to do is hold right on the direction pad to play which is fundamentally false. Most of the 2D Sonic games reward exploration, which added a sense of depth to the game.

Thirdly, why is Sonic the only game that needs to "stay true to its roots"? Basically no other platformer has that requirement. Mario is in no way similar to the 2D games and thats not a bad thing, same with Donkey Kong. The skills of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles opens the possibility for incredible 3D level design, there's no reason why they need to stick with the holding forward and occasionally jumping gameplay.

Fourthly, Sonic needs a complete reinvention. It needs to pick and choose what works and what hasn't but essentially start from scratch. Probably the only thing I would recommend keeping from the 3D Sonic's is the Chao artifical life simulator because it essentially creates incentives for incredible replay value. Other than that SEGA needs to go back to the drawing board and think outside the box.

Debating with fanboys, its not
all that dissimilar to banging ones

Sonic 2d was awesome but Sonic in 3d doesn't work to be honest.

See I can that too. Lol second time I had to say this.

You asked, "What is it that people have against Sonic games?"  This is a question that can only be answered with a persons' own opinion. Just because you don't like the answers doesn't mean you need to be an ass about it.

Some people don't like Sonic games. Deal with it.

I've got me some mad love for the lombax :D

I dunno I think Ninty makes games of some insane quality, like very fluid, non-existant glitches, great framerate etc etc, I think their programmers are GREAT, I just don't get the games :/

WHY AREN'T THEY MAKING GOOD 2D PLATFORMERS STILL ;-; I miss the days of Super Metroid :(Thats what sonic needs on the PSN, a good 1080p insanely fast 2D sidescroller with some of it's classic badass music :P

^ Believe :) Or just buy Sonics DS games.Ok,ok!No 1080P,but at least a good portion of all that what defined the Genesis ones imo.And maybe one day a 3D remake and/or sequel of Chrontrigger for DS 2 :)

Quality for Life

I think a really, really good 2D Sonic game using the best 3D graphics the Wii can produce at extreme speeds and 60fps, funded by the money from M&S, would make me buy it.

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

Yah no DS here :/ No real plans of buying one, but I'm just saying the Genre in general didn't need to die off x.x I thought Odin's Sphere was awesome! I'd LOVE to see a massively overhauled version of Super Metroid with AMAZING particle effects, insane polygon counts, texturing up the wazoo, etc etc etc in a 2D version.

Metroid was the reason I stopped liking Ninty I think, when they took my favorite franchise and turned it into a FPS >< Dropping all those badass tools I used to love so much... Anyone remember the speed booster? How about the Moon Jump thing? Remember the Skrew attack WITH the moon jump ><!!!!!! Damn you FPS and your non-friendly to platform ways! ><

Hopefully with stuff like Wii-ware, Live market, PSN we can start seeing something of the sort :D
