So what is it that makes a sonic game good?

Four simple things:

1. Speed

2. Sonic

3. Tails

4. More speed

Sega seems to have forgotten this.

I disagree it only need speed more speed and sonic maybe a couple levels where all you do is run down a mountain.

Well if sonic games aren't that good then why do they sell well? Sonic and the Secret rings should get to a million sometime next year.

Bet with OriGin: Within 1 year Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be ahead of Mario Kart Wii (when aligning the one whole year from each region). 2 week ban from Vgchartz for the loser. Edit: Darn! Looks like OriGin will win.

nothing really, except they haven't really changed too much since sonic adventure 2 (in a good way). They really haven't been revolutionary in the past 10 years.

Like the thread title says, whats so bad about his games? It can't be sales because his games sell a bit more than a million especially when you combine the sales of multiplatform games. I can't seem to figure out why people bash it. Anyone here know?

Sonic was the best platformer back then, also Mario. Sonic was good in the 2D world but when they tired to take the series into the 3D world, it was nothing but failure. What makes Sonic a failure in the 3D world is the camera controls. They are annoying as hell and Sega really does need to adjust this if they want Sonic to recover from the series losses. You see how Nintendo manage to change from 2D to 3D, maybe Sega should learn from Nintendo.

But to be honest, I see this series dying real slowly as years progress.

I stop playing the series back when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released and its was the end for me....

So you're implying that if it sells well, it must be good? That's not the case; look at Mario Party 8...

I think the only way we'll see a new decent Sonic platformer is if Ninty was allowed to develop it.

Who says they sell well?  Sonic Rush is well regarded but isn't selling too well.  Sonic on 360/PS3 basically bombed.  Sonic and the Secret Rings is the best seller in quite a while, and it's not exactly impressive either, but a steady and consistant seller at any rate.   Wii seems to be very good to Sonic.

But even Sonic and the Secret Rings felt like a very unpolished game.

Nevertheless Sonic sells on Brand Name if nothing else, blemished as it may be.

Gameplay:
The best 3D Sonic game is Sonic Adventure 2...er, the Sonic/Shadow portions. Those were pretty much about pure speed, but no real path navigation. Sadly, to reach the next Sonic/Shadow stage you had to put up with lots of crap.

Instead of realizing, "hey, maybe we should keep making speed sections!" Sonic Team moves further and further away, adding "team" mechanics (Sonic Heroes), moral decisions (Shadow the Hedgehog) or...I don't what the heck Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 was about.

The GBA and DS Sonic games are 2D and still have that sense of speed and multiple paths that pulled Sonic above the cries of "Mario Clone!" back on the Genesis/Mega Drive. But those aren't the main Sonic games, and we keep getting more 3D garbage.

Character:
Sonic, back in the 90s, was the "cool" character. He was the 'dude with the 'tude. In the US Sega aggressively marketed him as the hip response to Mario. Jumping on turles was dumb, BLAST PROCESSING (lol) was awesome to the extreme.

Nowadays with more "mature" and more violently rated characters, Sonic's edgy attitude is considered bland. He can't be XTREME because he's a anthropormorphisized hedgehog and is "too kiddy." He can't be edgy anymore because he'd scare off the kids. And he can't be the last champion of platformers because, well, Mario's the only real survivor from the 2D -> 3D platformer nuke.

Killing blow:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 was supposed to "rescue the franchise" while Sonic & the Secret Rings was a side project. Sega has done serious harm to their brand and will need to completely change their design philosophy if they want oldskoolers to respect the Blue Blur again.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Loads of reasons, first sega's policy of late (from sonic adventure 2 and onward) seems to be really annoying music is a requirement, second since sonic adventure 2 really annoying grinding seems to absolutely required,
third idiotic stories and characters have become standard
if sega got rid of grinding the level designs would be tolerable, if they got rid of the annoying stories and characters the cut scenes wouldn't be driving people crazy,
and if they got rid of the annoying music well it could have good music.
