Forums - Gaming - Is Kinect eating into Wii sales?

Nintendo's problems have always been their own, because of their total lack of third party support and their asynchronus competition, even with Kinect in the picture, Wii's current sales problems are mostly on Nintendo's shoulders

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

i think you (but it could have been someone else) made this thread during the holidays to which i said something along the lines of "i'll have to wait and see the post holiday sales.".

well, (assuming that the NPD numbers more-or-less back up the VGC numbers) i have to say i think it is true.  wii is down YoY massively, 360 is up YoY massively.  sure, the slim redesign is probably helping but i have to imagine that kinect is the majority factor at play here.

Kinect is mostly selling to current 360 owners. If its eating into the Wii's sales, it's a small portion.

More importantly, I think you're downplaying how many people are buying 360's for the Kinect.

Wii sales do indeed appear to be down while 360 and Kinect sales are very strong. That leads me to believe casual audiences may be shifting to the 360 which was MS's goal.

Other than Kinect, the 360 isn't offering anything else particularly fresh and prices haven't gone down. So what else could be causing the boost in 360 sales?

Well, I used to want an xbox360 and was about to get one (saved up my pocket money for a year and even *milked cows for granpa after school each day for extra pennies) but now it looks too darn casual for me, so no thanks, Mr Gates. I only like hardcore games and hardcore consoles!!!!

The hardcore has not disappeared. GO get a xbox and get gears.

PS3 waves hands in air while nodding head in the direction of uncharted, killzone, resistence and infamous all standing alone and waiting

Halo waves back. (and outsells all 4 combined)

but its 4 v 1.

more choice = better

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

I wish people would stop comparing the Kinect to the Wii. They are really not that similar, besides having a similar lineup of 3rd party shovelware. Wii genearlly represents unique ideas in games, as well as old school gaming values and characteristics. Kinect mainly has a bunch of "birdmen" games with limited gameplay, which is also why only a few of the games are selling significant numbers.

And to answer the question, no, they are not eating into Wii sales. Nintendo has hurt its own sales by focusing too much on niche hardcore games for most of last year, as well as third parties cutting the life of Wii short from very little support.

Ehhh.... Halo has more value than all four of those combined. Based on the endless hours so many people spend online.

But there are other exclusives for what its worth. Gears, Crackdown, Fable, etc.

"Wii is substantially down everywhere. 360 is only substantially up in the Americas"

Good observation.

I look at Kinect and Wii as two machines that have done very well courtesy of motion gaming hardware.

Take the motion gaming out of the Wii, well it would be another Gamecube.

Wii's 2010 software is arguably one of the best years ever in regards to quantity of quality titles. However, its motion technology now seems dated compared to Kinect. For example, I was at a store the other day. People were all over Kinect Sports. But Move and Wii had nobody around them. I think I saw tumble weeds.
