I feel pretty confident in saying that PSP will get a price drop. Possibly as early as by the end of next month.

i think the most it will cost is around the 300-400 mark, the psp cost $100 more than the ps2 so i dont think the psp2 will cost over 100 of what the ps3 will cost (ps3 will most likely be 250 when psp2 releases)

Play Me
both can do well, never would have seen that coming,
personally I think they'll perfrom similarly to the ds/psp 2 to 1 or so,
personally I buy both when they are both around 250 USD
plus I think both will allow the ds and psp sales to continue as long as demand exists
hopefully this time piracy won't be an issue, or atleast less of one

That's highly unlikely.
I'm guessing this year we will have
PSP price drop around end of March beginning of April to U$119-129 for Core, U$149 for Bundle and Go
PS2 price drop to U$49.99 - 79.99 for one last Holiday push as the ultra cheap alternative.
Losing some money on PSP2 to make it somewhat attractive.
Do you honestly think they'll drop the price of the PS3 along with all that as well?

PSP2 should be able to use the security that let the PS3 pretty much be hack free for 4 years. As long as they use random numbers they should be ok.
| Metallicube said: Don't crucify me Sony fans, but I sorta feel like Sony is sending this thing out to be inevitably slaughtered (but in all fairness, I think 3DS has its flaws too and will be a pretty drastic decline from DS's success) Besides Sony's coexisting gaming centered phone, now they are saying they are trying to keep the PSP alive at the same time as well? That's THREE Sony gaming handhelds. So not only is Sony going to be facing heavy competition externally with Iphone and other smartphones (which by Sony's own admission they are now competing with simply by releasing the Ericson) and the juggernaut 3DS, but they will be facing competition among their own devices. If one PSP didn't do well in sales (besides Japan, where handheld gaming dominates), I don't see why Sony would think that three would. People who want a cheap gaming centered device with an established library will opt for the PSP, while people who want a multimedia gaming device and a phone will get the Ericson. And NGP will get stuck with the crumbs on the table. Throw in the rumored price of $400, seemingly more third party support on Nintendo's handheld, and no 3D to help it compete with the 3DS, seems to me this device has very little chance of success. Of course, as always, it'll boil down to the games, and who knows, if the NGP can get some hugely popular games to call its own, it could push some hardware. But I feel at the very least, they are going to send this thing stumbling out of the gate like the PS3, and will be forced to play catch up the rest of the gen. |
This is exactly the way I feel about the situation. Unless the PSP doesn't get that much of a price drop, the NGP may not take off. When you throw in the Xperia Play, and its MASSIVE competition, it only gets worse for Sony.
Long sotry short:Keep the PSP alive, and you risk cannablizing the NGP's sales.
If Sony wants the NGP to thrive, the PSP may have to be canned all together, and it will have to launch at or below $300.

| psrock said: God I wish the NGP is like the PS3. Nintendo has never lost the handheld war, they always win, what Sony is doing is trying to give people choices, and enough with the 3D has being some king of advantage already. The NGP is not going to outsell the 3DS, we get it, Sony gets it. What they are trying to do is not only sell 60 million console but offer software that plays well and gives us a console experience on the Go. The PSP biggest weakness was not the DS, it was its control, it was just bad. DS offered a much better experience, but I feel now, they are going to compete now when it comes to the experience minus the gimmick. I love the Ipod Touch, The Evo, The PSP, but it never gives me the experience, the control I really want want playing. I don't want angry birds, slicing games all day. NGP will give people like me who don't care for Nintendo games a chance to experience great gaming on the Go for the first time. |
I still can't believe how some of you guys are so in the dark on your thinking. The control of the psp had nothing to do with how it sold. the people bitching about control all had one regardless
It was THE GAMES. The psp games were not portable games, they were console games on a portable. Nintendo's handheld had better portable games and thus sold better. Look at psp's system sellers. they are portable games. Monster hunter is a portable game, it is not a console game. I have the console version and i can tell instantly this works better as a portable. Pokemon is a portable game. and puzzle, brain teasers, ect are portable games.
Uncharted, God of War, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, GTA ect are NOT portable games. THey do not sell portable hardware. They are system sellers for consoles only. They will be just show-off games. To show people aroudn you "wow look at these pretty graphics", meanwhile you are thinking "damnit i want to go home and play on my TV"
Sounds like your going to make same mistake again, like sony seems to be doing based on games line-up, since your saying NGP will give you the first time to experience gaming on the go. Can't wait to see you realize this very thing. That there are games that are good on home consoles and there are games that are good on portables. More often than not they are NOT the same.

The PSP is one of the best selling console of all times, it had no issues selling, it was its control, not the games that slowed it down. Read every review, read every owners, the thing that has always hurt the PSP is its control.
The 3DS is getting tons of console games yet I never hear this issue. The game you guys want on the 3DS, MH is a much better game on the console, yet I don't see you guys not wanting it.
NGP will be able to play both casual and core games. I believe it will bring a new experiece even the console can't bring. The PSP did not have that advantage.

I'm fine with that but NGP better not be >$300
i think your top selling psp games shows my point.
those games, besides ones that are btter as handheld experiences, SELL better on consoles.
Only one that isn't a better console seller is MH, and as i said, it is a better handheld game. Are the controls better on handheld for it? NO the handheld controls suck from what i've heard. BUT it didn't stop millions from buying it. The controls on the consoles are vasely better and yet doesn't come close to its handheld sales.
Now WHY would a game that looks better, controls better, has more stuff/features and all around a better game not sell even close to as much as its handheld versions? Its obvious, its cause the game at heart is a handheld game. Just like people prefer to play cards with REAL cards than on the computer. Portable games are best as portable games, and console games are best as console games.
If a MH4 came out on PS3 and NGP simultaniously, you can bet your shiny dollar that the NGP version will destroy the PS3's version sales. Just like if Pokemon was finally made finally on a console, say the Wii, it would not even come close to the handhelds sales. EVEN if it was a 3DS launch title, thus a userbase of 0 vs the Wii's 85 million. There is a reason that Nintendo doesn't make a Nintendog's for the Wii, or many other games they ahve on the handheld. They know what type of game it is, and what system to best use it on.
