Forums - Gaming - Upcoming handheld that I want more than 3DS or NGP.

The general idea of it looks really cool, but I'd wait until a second version comes out or something, as they will likely improve on a lot of the features that need improving as mentioned in previous posts.

But surely you lose the advantages of PC such as keyboard mouse and better graphics with this. AND PC games are designed for PC, if I wanted Shogun 2 on there, that is 20GB and so most of the internal storage..

It does look quite cool, but the NPG is more for me

Yours seems the be the only resonable negative comment out of last bunch... Youre right that keyboard and mouse would be not present(technically they could as it has USB ports)  so you probably wouldn't be able to play some games, but the two 8 directional dpads seem to have very high levels of re-progaming ability. It wouldn't be conventional PC gaming for sure but seems like a fun experiment.

As far as storage, yeah you'd need a micro SD card if you want more than 2-3 full PC games. Another 32 GB should be enough.

NGP does look badass, but its a closed platform(till someone hacks it). I wouldn't say that this is for a hardcore gamer but more likely someone who is casual about gaming and wants to buy a portable device that replaces the laptop, tablet and portable gaming device.

Windows 7 driver support is also a huge advantage. Need an extra screen around the house? But a capture card dongle. Need 3G connection...buy dongle...etc

Those games won't play on it very well (except Counterstrike, but not the Source version). It looks to be based on Intel's Oak Trail platform, which is basically an underclocked Atom with some crappy Intel graphics chip. My netbook can't run those games at playable framerates, even at a measly 640x480 resolution with all details lowered, and this thing will be less powerful.

I don't think any Oak-trail benchmarks are out so lets wait and see...I do wish they went with AMDs C-350 CPU/GPU combo or something similar. Hopefully they make it somewhat able to play current games before they launch.

It shows Starcraft 2 on one of the pictures...that seems pretty current to me.

If they can publish a dedicated list of games which are tested and working, it will help people make a decision...

Ill prolly pick it up even if it doesn't run solitare lol...seems like a badass device to have.

was avoiding this thread. didn't know wht to expect but as with NGP i'll need to know more, and im not sure wht its for.

I don't have any faith for the Oak Trail CPUs to outperform a quad Cortex A15 in the same power consumption. Nor the GPUs vs. Tegra or the PSP2's GPU. If it does work it will be hard to use Windows on such a small screen and it will have poor battery life.

Personally I would buy an NGP and hack it to run all the games you said.

I may do this as well, but the odds of NGP being hacked to support 50% of stuff Win 7 machine will support is slim to none.

My expectations for this device are:

3 hour battery life

sub 500 dollar price

Ability to run some calssic PC shooters like Halo, Blood, Shadow Warrier, Quakes, Duke, Doom, Unreal and other types of games which arent too demanding on hardwre.

If they deliver on these things, I'm sold. I need a tablet and laptop like machine for non gaming purposes and this looks like it will do.

But like I said, shame they couldn't do a AMD C-350 version...

I'm not sure Brazos has a tablet form factor version yet. Maybe 2012's Bobcat will.

Since you're using it as a tablet I think the choice of Intel/Windows is OK actually. 3 hours is hardly portable though, especially if it takes an hour or more to charge.

$500... there's no way I'll pay that much for a console/portable again... 'sides, with such specs, I don't think it'll outperform my laptop as far as battery life goes... meh. Sorry disolitude :P
