Forums - Sales Discussion - The Offical January 2011 NPD Thread (Data in 3 Hours for Jan 3-30)

The information below comes straight from Wedbush Morgan…

Xbox 360 – 381,000 (15% y-o-y)

Wii – 319,000 (-31% y-o-y)

PS3 – 267,000 (-3% y-o-y)

Current generation (PS3, Wii, 360, PSP, DS) software sales were $572 million, $52 million above our estimate, while legacy software sales were $4 million, $6 million below our estimate. Wii software sales were $179 million (down 20% y-o-y), Xbox 360 sales were $170 million (up 8%), and PS3 sales were $141 million (up 24%). DS software sales were $72 million (down 13%), while PSP software sales Entertainment: Software| 3 were $10 million (down 37%).

The increases in sales for the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms have become the norm, and declines for the other consoles have also become the norm. Over the next year, we expect Wii and DS software sales to continue the negative trend, but anticipate strong sales for Nintendo’s 3DS that should spur overall handheld software sales back into positive territory. We expect PS3 software sales to spike when several high profile releases launch in the coming months, and believe that overall PS3 software sales would benefit immensely from a hardware price cut, expected in June.

Under one-fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony’s Move controller, suggesting another modest month (we have chosen not to subscribe to peripheral data). Just under three-fifths of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral, as Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles again outsold PS3 Move console bundles by almost 5:1. We note that the top selling Kinect software titles easily outsold their Move counterparts

so the 360 sold the most for the month.

Which most likely means Wii and PS3 sales must be a lot lower then we anticipated.

So the 360 is actually only 20k overtracked after those recent adjustments?

Not bad

Not bad at all.  Within margin of error.  Considering NPD are still estimates as well, hopefully this brings an end to all of the ripping of the site's tracking estimates.

Of course if the PS3 is overtracked by more than 10%, does that mean we're going to have to endure 3 months of "just wait until shipment numbers"?  Please God no ...

Well, like you said, NPD numbers are estimates too.

NPD numbers are automatically undertracked because they do not include Wal-Mart and a few other highend retailers. So VGC 403K estimate is probably about right for U.S. NPD numbers in the U.S. are always undertracked and numbers in EMEA are usually overtracked by VGC.

So first VGC article estimated 360 to be around 481,000 which was way overtracked. If we divide this by the 4 weeks of January, then it is 25,000 per week. Which means that 360 was third behind Wii and PS3 in every week world wide.

It looks like 360 is selling 20-30 K more than the PS3, and not double as per vgchartz latest numbers including this month.

where the hell is 481000,look back what etomaz replyed man

The initial estimates for 360 were 481,000 then it was adjusted down a couple of days ago to  403,000 which means that 360 was third behind Wii and PS3 all january. I dont see why would this change this month, I see even more overtacking for 360 in next NPD based on VGC having 360 selling double what PS3 and Wii are selling.

BS , the only reason Ps3 outsold 360 in January was because Japan buys more after holidays and in Spain The gifts are open day 6 January.

February will be owned by 360 and even Last January Months were EVEN AFTER ADJUSTMENTS and its only overtracked by 20K and Ps3 is overtracked aswell by at least 10K so your argument sucks so please go HOME.

whoa! one has to remeber when the article the source worte, if im not mistaken the 360 was adjusted down again b4 that article meaning there US estimate could of been over 500k, so basiclly all the people the were mocked and even banned in the WW and NA up threads should get some kind of (as toastyboy would say) apology, as i believe there argument was that the 360 cant be selling that good in NA and that PS3 should be gettin those weeks WW victories

as for the PS3 being over tracked on here for americas if i was a MS fan i wouldnt really bring that up b/c for the last 2 months we have

VGC americas 360 about 3.1M NPDs estimates are 2.24M for US

PS3 1.7M to NPDs 1.48M

now if you even go all the way back to 2008 after the 360 got a $80 price cut it still didnt see those type of sales outside of US as VGC shows for its Dec- Jan period

360 VGC 2.1M to NPDs 1.75M

also Jan. was not owned by the 360, PS3 outsold it WW for that month if you meant for just US thats obvious and has been the case since the gen started

3 5th's of 380k is about 228k, so just under, lets say 220k. We have 430k for month of Jan, minus about 10% from mexico ect, that's about 390k. So 220k HW bundles and 170k standalone?

And move bundles seem to be about 45 ish k or under.

Software sales are interesting... despite lower MSRPs, lower new unit sales and it's biggest 3 games being bundled, Wii still outdid 360 for software dollars.

Also, holishit @ PSP. Just $10 million?  VGC is WAY overtracking PSP game sales...

red_dragon said:

Sony did not talk about Hardware in their press release. They said their software is up 25% and they have the best games coming this yr.

LOL!! That's because their hardware sales in the U.S. are dismal. The only thing the PS3 is outselling in the U.S. is the PSP and PS2.

NPD doesn't track Wal Mart or did it change?

They don't get data from WalMart. They extrapolate to get their numbers (just like VGC does) since they do not have full market data (NPD has ~50% iirc).

You can add  5-10% to NPD numbers since then don't track every U.S. retailer and then don't track Wal-Mart at all which is THE biggest retailer in the U.S. lol!! NPD numbers are always undertracked.  VGC first adjusted numbers where pretty much accurate.

VGC includes DD sales?  When did this happen?
