I feel the same way. I partially blame Japan because they refuse to buy consoles in the numbers that they used to and buy more handhelds for Monster Hunter and such. I also blame laziness on Nintendo and Sony's part because they don't seem to want to make handheld games at all and they rather port what has worked on consoles on these portable devices. The difference is that handheld gaming and console gaming are 2 complete different beasts. Handheld gaming is playing games on a tiny screen with audio limited to what the handheld's speakers or your headphones can produce and your non-static environment. You can't expect home console games to translate given these limitation, it doesn't make sense given that the bulk of us should already have home consoles.
That's why games like Nintendogs, Pokémon, Brain Age and App store games sell so well. Essentially, these games let the player set the pace of play and that's an incredible asset when your consumer base is playing these games on road trips, plane trips, and commutes. Imagine having to play a game with a full tutorial, cutscenes of varied length, all the fluff you can expect from home consoles and you're pretty much at the will of how long your ride will be, where you're playing your handheld and who's around you.
I'm sorry if they was rather sloppy but I don't want to play home console games when I'm not home. I rather use my home console for that.
