Forums - Sales - Sony - PS3 in more locations worldwide? or is it?

Yeah, they sell Ps3's everywhere. Even in space!

Yeah.. aliens are playing it on the moon right now. lol!!

Who knows where PS3 are around the world? Only Sony knows for sure and they aren't saying. Microsoft has Windows all over the world and just about every country, I'm sure. Who know exactly which countries the XBox 360 are in.

It's an interesting notion

If PS3 passes PS3 WW, but 360 sells more than PS3 in all the countries they're BOTH sold in, which is the more "popular" console

Ah but that presuposes a consistent position - which we already know isn't the case.

The answer is already evident - it varies by country where they are both sold.  There are some countries were 360 is for sure more popular - US and UK say - and some where PS3 is for sure more popular Germany, Iberie, etc.  And of course Japan.

Handily for PR folk this variety allows for each to claim victory based on different criteria.

EDIT : I see from later posts you're adding markets together, but the issue with that is that different markets are different sizes.  Strictly speaking you can't say something that is more popular in a larger market but less popular in a lot of smaller diverse markets is more popular.  You're trying to stich together different geographies, etc. as though they are the same.  That's falling into the trap of this is popular in the single biggest market therefore it's the most popular.  Common US viewpoint (I keed!) but not accurate across diverse geographies.

My view is from the numbers it's pretty clear that 360 tends to be more popular in English speaking territories and PS3 tends to be more popular in non-English speaking territories.  No idea why given that despite all the fanboy posturing when it comes to games they are 90% identical.

I already said they have their strengths in different countries, I'm talking about if you had to define which console was most popular WW, 360 would win.

Can't really agree with that as I think it's flawed to count different size markets equally as a total and declare a winner.   Heck, a home grown Chinese device could sell more and we'd have to say worldwide that's the most popular.

I just don't buying saying let's add up sales for these 35 plus territores and say 360 is more popular.  That's ignorning too much local differentiation plus of course the fact in many of those territories the 360 has over a 12 month and two holiday period time lead.  Factor that in and arguably the PS3 becomes more popular - if I add in over 14 months of additional EMEAA sales to arrive at an adjusted apples for apples number.

I say we should just accept that 360 is clearly the most popular in a number of territories and the PS3 is clear the most popular elsewhere.

It's too easy to spin it otherwise... for example I could say to balance out the different size markets let's total each individual country where one is more popular and then use the result to determine the most popular.  That approach would propbably favour the PS3.

That was really my original point - with such fragmentaiton of the market each PR can easily define different criteria and declare a win.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
