Based on your theory of more money in the US, the PS3 should be killing it in the US because its large price wouldn't deter sales. In the end, those who can afford an item that they want, will find a way to get it. Just like the rest of the world, the PS2 laid what should have been a tremendous path for the PS3 to dominate in the US. Ultimately, it has failed to take advantage of that. We can all debate the reasons why, but price has been an issue for the PS3 in the US and around the world. We have all seen that the PS3 has/had been picking up steam as the price has come down, but it hasn't taken off yet. It seems that M$ has had a few things up their sleeves at every turn to keep the PS3 at bay. We'll see if they can really do it again this year once Sony drops the PS3 another $100 in the US(and equal amounts in other markets).

Based on my theory what matters is popularity in a country. Xbox 360 is cheaper, true, but if people think PS3 is better for them than that's what they will purchase, and due to word of mouth that tends be the majority.
And MS has a good hold in the US right now, it will remain that way. Sony has a good hold in Japan, if Japan was as huge as the US both in terms of population and expenditure then 360 would have been long gone in this "popularity" contest, just saying.
Same thing for other countries in Asia, South America etc.
One of the reasons why $199 is more important for the PS3 than 360 is because of these other regions where the PS3 sells more.
Remove Japan and US from the picture, along with all the nations PS3 sells that 360 doesn't, PS3 still remains more "popular".
My point still stands.
