2K has put an end to years of rumours by officially confirming the development of The Darkness II, and has also announced that Digital Extremes will be managing the project.

Few details of the FPS have been revealed, other than that players will be reprising the role of long-haired Mafioso Jackie Estacado and controlling his supernatural darkness powers.

2K say the game also features a "hand-painted graphic noir technique" which enables it to stay true to its comic book origins.

The Darkness II is due for release Autumn 2011 for 360, PS3 and PC.

"Sometimes that whooshing sound you hear is that of comic fans holding their collective breath," said co-creator of The Darkness comics Marc Silvestri in a press release. Or it might just be the wind.

Kinda psyched because I loved the first one, but I'd feel a lot more confident if Starbreeze were making it.

I'm really looking forward to it and I still think the first is one of my favourite games made within this generation. I've always been a fan of Starbreeze and it's a shame that they can't make it, but I guess Digital Extremes has a decent record, I just hope they can tell a decent story and recreate the same universe and atmosphere that the first had. 

It is sad Starbreeze is not making it....Their FPS games are different than the majority on the market;. I hope Darkness II atleast will have an 'Open world aswell'..

If there was a Like button, I would definitely click it. Loved the first game, and at the time of its release, it had amazing graphics, animations and the voice acting was top notch!

Im pretty damn excited for a sequel but didn't Jackie die by the end of the first game, you know, consumed by the darkness...
