Forums - PC - Volition wants to do Freespace 3

Man, forgot all about freespace 2 but I had a blast playing that game. Especially that battle with the colussus that someone mentioned earlier. Hope something come of this as I have been waiting for a good air fighting game, and since this and descent I have not really found any.

I already would be happy if we see a Space game anytime soon...

I agree, Descent and Freespace were the last of the great space/air fighting games. To me, I would put Terminal Velocity on the same page, as it's one of my favourite games of all time as well. Radix as well, but it was a shame that it played more like a FPS instead of a Space Sim.

To be honest I think that now would be the perfect time given the maturity o the console generation.

What do you mean about maturity? Flight Action games like HAWX haven't been selling great on consolles, and HAWX 2 seems to have bombed. If such arcadey flight games had "poor" sales, imagine a more complex flight game like Freespace 3 would do.

If right now is the perfect time, it's because of the PC Digital Distribution's growth, especially with a Steam partnership.

That is also because Hawx is nothing special..Especially Hawx 2 is a disaster...

Their are plenty of flight games on the market but most of them are not worth you money...

Ace Combat 6 and Il sturmovik are enjoyable;...But the rest..Blazing Angels 1&2, Heroes over Europe, the hawx games...Sky crawlers, Apache air assault, Over G fighters.. etc.....Are meh..

It'll be on consoles also, so the extra 1-3M sales would be a bonus they cannot ignore even if the PC version with Eyefinity / 3D vision surround is the superior choice. Besides, the engines etc have matured to the point where they can easily create the high definition assets quickly and efficiently.

Tease.

Even though I don't disagree with your point of view, when it comes to consoles, I believe the biggest challenge for a game like Freespace 3 to come out on consoles would be it's control scheme.

As far as I can remeber, Freespace 2 had 25 inputs for Targetting, 22 inputs for Ship&Weapons and 44 inputs for misc controls such as Squad orders, different energy outputs for shields, engines, weapons, etc.

Memorizing them all on the Keyboard was a challenge unto itself, and I seriously don't see how they can be simplified into the limited options of a console controller without losing the amount of control that you had in the previous games.

Kinect with voice commands could cover squad orders and sheild/power managment. But i agree it would be hard for a normal controller

Hmmm that would be a very good choice actually. If it could be properly implemented via Kinect, it would avoid those awkward situations were you were trying to raise your shields and inputted the command to raise your weapons and lower everything else >_<.

It was so awesome when you were used to all the controls.

I'd be tossing out orders, targeting, and rushing around like nobody's business.
