Forums - General - Jon Huntsman Jr. Can he win the Republican nomination?

So, Jon Huntsman just quit the ambassador to China job in what is believe to be a indicator of a presidential bid in 2012.  If you don't know who Jon Huntsman is, here is an article that briefly outlines how he could be a contender in 2012

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/case-forcase-against/the-case-for-jon-huntsman.html

Personally, I'm very excited about this.  Before now, I've kinda been a little half hearted on the Romney train.  Although I don't think Romney is really any better than Obama, so I didn't really care that much.  However, being a resident of Utah and having had Huntsman as a governor, I know first hand how excellent his leadership skills are.

Under Huntsman, Utah was voted the best managed state in a study by pew research.

He is a fiscal conservative and social moderate (matching up perfectly with my own stances)

he has the best foreign policy credentials of any presidential candidate in years.

The question though, is can he win?  I think he would stack up very well against Obama in a general election, but I think is primary election chances are a little slim.

He is pretty much an unknown outside of Utah at this point, but he does have over a year to fix that.

He has been part of the Obama administration, of which the tea party nuts probably won't be happy with.

He is a social moderate, which again the tea party won't like.

He is a mormon, which is still looked down upon.

what do you think?

Unlikely. Even if he did, Obama would wipe the floor with him. The media is just a little too excited about Huntsman, and that doesn't bode well for his chances in either the primary or the general. Going with the media's favorite Republican didn't work out well for the GOP in 2008 and it will only produce the same result in 2012, as the media will turn on him the instant he goes from being the least bad Republican to simply the Republican.

but there really isn't anything bad with Huntsman, he doesn't carry any kind of baggage like all the other likely Republican candidates.   The only bad thing you could say about him is he worked for Obama.  However, he worked in the capacity of an Ambassador to China, which is probably the most important country as far as foreign policy goes.  I don't see how that could be bad really.  Makes him much more informed than any other candidate.

Doubt it, hopefully Ron Paul is running again. He has no chance but he would get my vote instantly.

I'd rather have Palin than a pedo-mormon as my president.

He spent time at a Taiwanese Mormon Missionary.

So Manus is assuming he used that time there to sleep with children.

Also.  He hates mormons.  I wouldn't take it seriously though.  I mean, he is serious, but i wouldn't take it seriously.

I'll do my research in a bit. I think I'd prefer Romney over him just by face value.  Should be interesting to watch.  If a tea party candidate becomes prez, I'm leaving the country.

I agree. RP would indubitably be a fantastic president. Better then the many that would have come before him.

You know... I don't know why people hate Mormons either.  Is their religion very strange... and very strange when compaired the default involves people coming back from the dead, saving peoples souls and symbolic cannibalism?

Sure... but I mean, how many asshole Mormans have you met?

Mormons seem way less likely to drink or do drugs, they always seem to have a positive attitude and in general are some of the nicest people i've ever met.

Seems like part of the religion or culture or something.
