Forums - Sony - 2 Things I Think Will be in PS4

Basically because they're already in laptops:

>100Gig SSD instead of HDD, there are laptops out there with 128Gig SSD. They are expensive at the moment, but will get cheaper and be economic to put into a console by then (so Next box will have it too no doubt). This could even be in the next PS3 re-design (the redesign that Sony itself calls the slim PS3).

An Android OS: There are laptops on the market with Android OS pre-installed, with Android as the default OS that boots up on some of those laptops, thus it's not just a phone/tablet OS. Also Sony is cosying up to Android in the mobile phone and, more imprtantly for PS4, handheld gaming with the NGP. If there's going to be a seamless interface between NGP and PS4 then an Android OS (with Chrome as the internet browser) on PS4 makes sense.

The Android thing is synergistic for Sony and Google, because having Android in the PS4 puts Android in a non-mobile device, making Android the total package, almost on the same footing as Apple's OS, and Windows. Of course by the time PS4 comes out Android might already be invading the PC, but putting it in PS4 would still be good for Google, and a point of difference with Wii the next and Nextbox.

Why Android OS? AFAIK, the OS for real computers is called Chrome OS.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I didn't say Android isn't available for PCs, I just think Chrome OS is better suited for the PS4, since I believe the next generation of consoles will be heavily cloud-computing based.

Just imagine Playstation the Fourh. Always the last. ROFL, d0med.

Neither will be in the PS4.

SSDs are great for sure - low power consumption, very fast, no noise etc. But they won't be in the PS4 because they are simply extremely expensive - the price/capacity ratio is orders of magnitude worse than HDDs. And prices won't drop that fast.

The solution the PS3 already uses is better, because it is more flexible and already allows for SSDs: You can use ANY storage that you can plug into a standard 2,5" SATA bay. So the choice is up to you: You can either use a standard HDD with lots of gigabytes and low prices, but if you really want the benefits of SSDs, simply buy a 2,5" SATA-SSD.

And integrated Android is highly unlikely for a stationary game console that doesn't even have a touchscreen. If anything, we might see the return of "Other OS". That would be a more flexible solution and would enable running Android as well.

Here is my prediction what the PS4 will have: It will ship with a camera/microphone combination similar to the Playstation Eye, but probably stereoscopic 3D and HD. And it will probably also have a split motion controller like PS Move and Wii.

I think so, too.

Of course SSDs are better in many ways, but you also have to consider that those are great for laptops, i.e. mobile devices, where it's best to have as few moving parts as possible. A home console is basically sitting in the same place all the time, so an SSD doesn't make too much sense when you factor in the price difference with a normal HDD.
