The best it could do is destroy Sony.
Just on people buying multiple versions of the same game ...
From what I have seen, most people can be motivated to buy a re-release of a game they already own but this typically only happens if the new version of the game is released years after the initial release; and typically only if it is released on a handheld or next generation console.
There are a handful of people who will buy multiple versions of the same game on different platforms at the same time, but this is an insignificant minority; and certainly not a good idea to build your business model around them.
It better be one danm addicting game for me to buy it on a portable when I can already play it at home. Also unless your constantly using city transit or going to the DMV when do you portable guys actually play your games on the go. I know I only see people playing portibles at my college and that is a rare moment.

Also if Sony makes it so you can transfer save files and acheivements over to your NGP and back people would want to buy both versions so they can play their games on the go. As well not all NGP owners will own PS3's. Some people buy only handhelds and not home consoles. Other people buy home consoles from one company and handhelds from another. Meaning the NGP is going to be a new market for those people. However I don't expect Ports to sell as well on NGP as on the home consoles, but they should still sell enough to add alot of sales to the software. it could potentially mean the difference between loosing money or breaking even! |
See if devs are smart and they make complementary games, rather than just slightly downgraded version or exact copies, I can see buying both version of a game.
I understand the notion of taking a game im playing on my ps3 and then jump directly into the exact same game while im on the movie why not losing any functionality or graphics, but I'm not sure I would pay near double the price. Rather if each version of the game had unique and fun comeplementary factors that went back and forth between the games, where I can earn something from the portable version, which then shows up in the console version, and vice versa, that could be much more compelling.

I bet that is already in the works. We can confirm Trophies and stuff on NGP and its connectable to your PS3 so unlocking things in the handheld version using the PS3 version and vice versa is more then likely. Also I'm sure developers will add some features to their handheld versions.

I can attest to this. I have 3 versions of chrono trigger for instance. The original SNES version, one on the PS1 from final fantasy chronicles compilation, and the DS version. Each time was a slight upgrade, even if that upgrade was a direct copy of a prev gen game from console to portable.
I'm not so thrilled about getting ports of PS3 games, but i'd _love_ to be able to play PS1 and PS2 games on the NGP, even though I can play all those games right now on my PS2 (and PC... ahem).
Wow. You guys are so hardcore, you buy the same games multiple times.
I am just a casual, so, don't bite me.

Well you learned your lesson.
Clearly the guys on this forum buying multiple copies of the same game are the masses.
Based on this forum, we also learned PS3 is the most popular console ever.

not many rational gamers will buy multiple copies at the same time.
i actually have an idea. Sony can allow gamers to download the NGP version for free as long as the ps3 version is registered on the same psn account. Apparently, it will require serial numbers to register the game. But the gamers can get NGP games for free and it is only a small cost to publishers (royalty, which Sony should offer discounts in this case). It's a win-win really.
There is a complication though. Gamers can choose to sell the game to gamestop and keep the NGP version. To remedy that, I think it also needs a de-registration process, which requires the removal of the NGP version. The serial number cannot be re-used unless the de-registration is completed. The used game buyers then need to check whether the game has already been de-registered before handing over the money. In this way, used game market is still happy and at the same time, no one is going to keep the free games.
just some random ideas. probably sony will read this... unlikely.

I think that would be a great idea. However I bet Sony could link it to PSN:Plus. That way people are paying Sony for these services. It would also encourage gamers to upgrade to PSN:Plus. Also you could program the game itself to fix your complications. The second the game is placed in another PS3 it sends a message through PSN to the NGP. The NGP version on memory card or internal memory becomes unplayable as soon as connected to PSN (Save data remains saved). Then if the game is placed back in your origional console it allows you to redownload the portable version over PSN.
Whoola people could bring their game on the go, and if they sold the game ooops the NGP version gets deleted and your back to square one. Also Sony could pay the developers a 10cent royalty or what ever for every time the game gets downloaded onto a NGP, thus making profit for the developer as well.
