Do you have ANY idea of how much this will cost? I'm thinking somewhere around the $350... if we're lucky. Now who wants to buy a $350 handheld?
Besides, I'm hoping Sony's learnt from their lessons. The average consumer doesn't care about quality, they care about price. If the quality is insanely high, but so is the price, no one will buy it [PSPGo, early Ps3]. If the quality is medium, and so is the price, EVERYONE will buy it [Nintendo DS, Wii].
This hurts the hardcore gamers, but it increases profits and the #s of people owning the specified console. Would you rather the PSP2 be like the PSP in it's current state, or the DS in it's current state? Be honest

all it needs is a HUGE GIGANTIC protective security system so that even Geohot cannot hack it !

There is really no chance Sony would ever consider UMD to be a priority, and imo the inclusion of umd in the psp2 would be suicide.
What Sony can do however is create an adapter which is simply an external umd drive which can plug into the psp2, (as well as the go) and this would solve all of your problems.
One could possibly even do a one time transfer from umd to the hard drive maybe so umd's could still be enjoyed on a protable system in todays modern world, as they would be essentially converted into digital games.
Nice thread, it was a good read. I'm sure Sony will have everything correct for the PSP2 but I would not be suprised if it is $350 at launch.
What i want is a PSP2 with massice graphical power for games AND a fully integrated mobile phone. i.e. writing sms, taking calls, AND the newest version of Android including its appstore. yes, this would be hard for native psp2 games, but i think that would make sense. if you want to develop a "mini" game you could add it into the appstore and it'd be available for every androidphone-owner. but if you want to play a game with high graphic quality - you'll need the psp2.
The thing is, i don't want to carry a phone and a psp2 with me all the time. so combine those two things and i will buy this day one.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:
WiiU: Donkey Kong
XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

You may be kidding but thats kind of true. One of the DS's biggest selling points was it catered to many different audiences with "kiddy friendly" games such as Hannah Montanah etc.

I agree pricing is crucial to the success of these handhelds. Yet if the 3DS is 250, the PSP2 could bring itself in at 300 with no issue. We all know that Nintendo is no longer the only threat in the handheld market. Apple is in hot pursuit with their own direction for being the all purpose handheld. The PSP was always meant to be an all encompassing handheld device. Thats why it should be being marketed as suck in parallel with the iPhone/iPad. These devices debut at ridiculous prices and guess what? People still buy them in droves. 600 dollar price tag is nothing for fancy new gadgets now.Now you can get an off brand touch phone with many of the same capabilities and more for less than 200 so PSP2 having 3G etc when Sony makes similar devices themselves in house should be a cake walk.

What the PSP2 needs:
1) Original games that appeal to a broader audience
2) Original games that appeal to a broader audience
3) Original games that appeal to a broader audience
4) Goto 1
Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Brain Training and Nintendogs had more to do with the broad appeal that what you mentioned. Original content specific for the system, not console hand me downs.
