I think that this game may be under a lot of people's radars, or simply became lost in the torrential outpour of the holiday game release schedule. I want to remind everyone that Contra is awesome, and Contra 4 may be the most awesome of all.
The game plays much as previous titles in the series, though now uses both screens of the DS for a larger battlefield. The two-weapon mechanic that was introduced in Contra III is used again here, and the weapons are now upgradeable. There are nine levels of fantastic action-packed side- and vertical-scrolling (and pseudo-3D) awesomeness.
"Nine levels?" you scoff. "Pshaw! A game so short is not worth the money!"
While you would of course be wrong, another new addition to the series may sway your flawed opinion: Challenge Mode, the best thing to happen to the series since the spread gun.
This mode introduces remixed versions of specific parts of levels, enforces certain conditions, and requires completion with only one life. For example:
Pacifism - area must be completed with no firepower.
Accuracy - area must be completed with a level of 70-100% accuracy, depending on the challenge.
Gunplay - provides a new, "experimental" weapon with which to complete the challenge.
There are 40 challenges in total, and every four that you complete will unlock some kind of bonus content, whether it be new playable characters, developer interviews, unlockable NES games (Contra and Super C!) and so on. The accuracy challenges in particular completely change the way you will play the game as the typical "run and gun" style goes entirely out the window, making for a much more strategic, tactical approach.
In conclusion, if you have derived enjoyment from any 2D action games in the past, or any of this sounds even remotely interesting to you, BUY THIS GAME. Get your friends to buy it too, so you can take advantage of the multiplayer (no single-cart option).
IT IS AWESOME.
That is all.
