Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 2.10 upgrades Blu-Ray tomorrow

Sony will release new a PS3 firmware update tomorrow that will enhance the PS3's Blu-Ray movie playback, and add that anticipated AVI support we've all wanted.

Firmware version 2.10 will add 'Profile 1.1' Blu-Ray playback, which is the technical name for a new standard of Blu-Ray films that support new features such as picture-in-picture playback.

DivX support will also be added, along with VC-1 (wmv) video support, so you can finally watch all those perfectly legal videos on your PC through PS3.

Sony's also adding an option to change your voice online. Long-time xbox Live fans will remember Voice Masking on Xbox, which was removed when whiny kids doing constant impressions of Arnie with a robot voice got too much to bare.

Okay, so there's no in-game XMB.

Divx FTW. This is a great feature of PS3 and 360.
I am not so sure about BluRay 1.1 though I don't want minigames and animations on my BluRay discs.

" Okay, so there's no in-game XMB."

Can live without that, apart from chatting while playing (What for?) I do not see why everyone is so after this feature.

 Hey you forgot something

But one NeoGAF user points out, "DivX = porn. Porn = win."

Didja get that thing I sentcha?

"enhance the PS3's Blu-Ray movie playback"

What exactly will it do?

"What exactly will it do?"

Version 1.1 adds all the Java functionality for interactive discs. Expect lots of minigames in the extras section . And 2 picture stream support (for displaying two videos at the same time for example if you have a commentary and the original movie runs concurrently.).

That's great the DIVX codec will be operational. And the in game XMB is needed. Mostly for adding friends and reading mesages that come in while you are in game. It's annoying to have to quit the game just to see what friends are online in other games or to read messages that come in.

Get your Portable ID!

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

Most of the major online changes won't come until Home is released.

I can't wait for the in game XMB, that is if it ever comes, mainly for the reasons Mr. T said above me. Also so i can join friends games online and not have to send invites and such. That would be awesome. I'm not sure what all the blu ray stuff means but sounds good!!

Nice update.

Wow, I didn't think they'd ever add VC-1/WMV support. Cool.
