Forums - Sony - Activision may close PlayStation Network Black Ops servers

Very bad news for Sony if this even has a hint of becoming reality. This would send a huge message of lack of confidence if a developer was willing to take this form of hit. The obvious winners here are the PC and 360 platforms who will see a marked increase in sales.

Will this force an early exit of the PS3 and a new model? Will this force PSN to a paid model to placate Activision? Will they be able to fix this issue?

Whatever happens the loss of the master keys seems impossible to reverse. If this truly is impossible to reverse then I can only see this getting worse for Sony. At this moment in time this sounds like a rant but add notch to the end of Free PSN as Activision are coming and they want more money.

You are in deep delusion if you think this has even 0.001%  chance of happening. Oh, and funny you mention PC, where every online shooter gets hacked to death

At what point did I say I thought it was going to happen I think I used the term "if" and then based my response on this possible scenario. If (using it again just thought I would point it out so you would not become confused) this did happen  or was threatened it would be to try and monetise the on-line side and get extra revenue from Sony.

Kinect as seen by PS3 owners ...if you can pick at it   ...post it ... Did I mention the 360 was black and Shinny? Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.

Am I the only one who think that he told that to the dude because he was pissed off of people whining, because they can't do anything to make the servers better (suposedly), so do they want to still play this way or they shut them down, and everyone will be very pissed off.

And by the way FFS guys, what kind of internet conection do you have, I never had any single problem with PSN, not a single lag, (I'm dlding at 1.8 to 2.2mo/s) and my PS3 is conected by wifi. I don't know seriously, something that went wrong somewhere. (ok, I had to open 4 ports that were adviced by several people but I will never understand how can people have lags). I have to find someone who has them to see what it is...

well it shouldn't take too much for a peer-to peer connection to go balls up.

Consider this scenario: Mr. Host launched a game and everyone connects and are merrily blowing eachother up.

Little Lucy starts nailing porn torrents in the other room. Mr. Host's connection takes a massive hit because he hasn't set his router to prioritise the gaming traffic. everyone connected to Mr. Host's game complains of lag.

however, that doesn't cover the claims of 'hacking' being thrown around, and it seems like the claim in the OP was BS anyway, or at least could be the knee-jerk reation of a support tech to an annoyed 13 year old.

Proud Sony Rear Admiral

MW2 was a cracking game on the PC except it used Peer to Peer, God it was awful. Now that Black Ops has reinstated dedicated servers things are a lot better. Now I have to contend with the all to familiar server crash (and they crash a lot in Black Ops) and the ridiculous issue of every server having its own set of rules. No RCXD or tubes or last stands or Jumping or claymores, all of which I do not use but the moaning you get sometimes from either the admins or the players can become very tiresome.

Taking down servers will effect Activision a lot more than Sony, seeing as they have multi million fanbase on PS3

Which is why I think we have an element of sabre rattling and seeing as they have already tried to grab a chunk of cash from the Xbox (and succeeded)  I can see a scenario where they try for the second biggest selling platform by whatever means. Activision do seem to like the colour of money but they also like to throw their weight about in the process.
