Who do Activision think they are telling sony to drop their price by 200 in a year? they already dropped the price significantly and are losing money big time. I give Trenton or whatever his name is credit for standing up for himself, even though he probably should have shut up.

There are dozens of better ways of replying to Activision's comment in a nicer way, no matter how stupid Activision's comment was in the first place.

Here's an example answer:

"We understand that third parties would like us to price our systems as low as possible, however the PS3 is an expensive piece of hardware. We'll keep looking for ways to reduce the system's price, but I don't expect reaching $199 in 2009".

See how much nicer that is? I'm sure sSomeone in Tretton's position should find something even better.

Also interesting stuff.

LBP on time for the Beta.

Says Sony has more 1st party development teams then Nintendo (News to me.)

Maybe he was just taking a run at Halo though since he said "we arn't dependent on any 1 title."

Sony has more internal dev support than Nintendo and Microsoft combined. Most hasnt shown it's face yet. Could be interesting next year.

As to the original topic: does anyone think this will actually have any serious consequences? Because I think Activision needs Sony and Sony needs Activision, and regardless of some rather embarrasing faux pas, I can't imagine this actually having an effect on corporate policies or planning on either side. Other than not liking each other very much, I sincerely doubt we won't see CoD5 on the PS3, unless Activision decides they'd rather skip on 700k+ software sales just to prove a point.

I don't think that's really the point. I don't think anyone seriously believes that this will drastically change Activisions view of the PS3 but one has to wonder:

How long is Sony going to allow one of their top Playstation execs continue to burn bridges and make an ass of himself to the media? Tretton became a liability long ago and like I said over a year ago, Sony needs to seriously consider putting a gag order on damned near everyone not named Stringer (he's the only one who consistently appears to have a brain in that company).

Tretton, Hirai are supposedly Stringer yes men. Instead of putting people in charge of SCE with talent Stringer put obedient yes men or so the whispers say. Also Stringers the worlds worst pr man. His comments on all things Sony are crude and naive because he knows nowt of what he's talking about. At the moment when Stringer leaves his CV will look hocking.

All Tretton had to say was "we're getting the price of the console down as quickly as we can, but we have to balance the reductions with our cost to build. Price reductions will come in time as our costs go down."

Simple. Doesn't say they *won't* drop the price to $199 in 2 years. Doesn't say they *will* drop the price to $199 in 2 years. It just says they want to be as competitive hardware-wise and supportive software-wise as they can be.

It wasn't productive to go on a rant against someone in charge at a large 3rd-party publisher... and I doubt it improved his reputation in the industry.

I work around a number of executives at a fortune 100 company, and this sort of emotional outburst just doesn't seem to fit with what's expected of people at that level.

I don't see it financially possible for playstation to be at $199 in two years, but you never know. At that point they will be hemorrhaging money with each sale of a PS3 (barring some major drop in production costs for them.)

One thing that will go against them is that in 2 years I guarentee you you will be able to get a blue ray player for less than 200 bucks.

One thing that helps them is that I don't think they need to get to 199.00 to start to really move consoles. I think once they get to 299.00 things will really pick up for the playstation, as there is still a lot of brand loyalty and name recognition out there for them (though that really didn't save the virtual boy or n64)

I'll take this opportunity to again offer Sony my services as a PR hack. I know I have no formal training, and I dislike Sony and hate the PS3, but if given the chance I will make Sony's PR infinitely more effective and infinitely less buffoonish. Especially given that I will do it for less than half of what they pay Tretton the value added to Sony's PR would be infinite. Sony should seriously consider how great that will work as a lead into fessing up to the fact that they won't be shipping or selling or whatever 11 million PS3's this year.

ROTFLOMA that is the most funniest post I've read this week

@Rukusa, I'll call Phil to ask him to do that, since he's a tall man, big feet, so large socks and therefore... a lot to stock That will keep Tretton's mouth shut for a while

Yikes, tough crowd.  Oh well, at least someone appreciated it.

I agree, crumas.  That would have been a much better way of saying it, and less insulting.

The way Tretton put it of $199 being impossible, leaves it implying that a higher amount, like $299, is unlikely as well.  And don't think that Activision would interpert it that way, they are human like the rest of us, who rationalize our emotional beliefs when we can.

And if they believe Sony can't get the price down, then Activision's estimates of future PS3 sales will be lowered.  Leading to more re-allocation of resources to Wii and X360 based on those lowered expections of PS3.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.
