What I want to see from Kinect is something that most of the hackers still don't get: NEW game experiences that are designed around this interface. As they are currently, games won't work well with it. Combat heavy games, first person shooters, controller interface designed games WILL NOT WORK. It starts with what the interface CAN do and games need to be designed for THAT. We are not game designers and that is why I see so many struggling with conceptualizing what to do with Kinect and thus think its going to be limited to only shovelware and minigames. Game concepts that would be boring with a controller can be made interesting by Kinects interface. Its more engaging, physically and emotionally. The hope is some developer's creative juices are re-energized by it instead of looking for quick cash ins (we all know they are there and will be there, though). The most disappointing thing for me, though, is to see gamers so close minded to games growing beyond what we have now. As a fan of Star Trek, the holodeck is the final evolution of what so many of us love as gamers and this is the next huge leap TOWARD that. To keep insisting that this can't succeed without a controller is hold on to the past and stifle gaming evolution. Kinect needs to push the controller free envelope so that we can reach the holodeck realization. |
Keeping an opened mind, some day we might experience that "Star Trek holodeck" gaming. But also keeping and opened mind, not everyone will want to play a Mario platformer by literally running and jumping. Some people actually prefer to RELAX on a couch and press button. For me this especially happens after running five miles. The closest thing I can realistically compare to a "Star Trek holodeck" gaming experience is something such as Lazer Tag. But guess what? You need something called a "gun" and a lot of space. Hmmm... The Kinect tech is good tech. When the "Star Trek holodeck" gaming experience can be realized, it will have to employ good tech as well. And keeping an opened mind keeps me seeing reality. There are great applications to Kinect alone, and I can see great applications to the "Star Trek holodeck" experience as well by itself. And both can be enhanced with a little help such as a physical "controller" to cater and expand to other preferences and experiences. Keeping and opened mind that is.
