Our target has things like clothes, shoes, hygiene products, snack foods, gaming etc but they are not competitive to the electronic stores, they dont do big game releases etc etc.

You know what that sounds like? An American Target.

big difference is target stuff is not exactly top quality stuff, its... I dunno how to explain it, Kmart is an option... in australia haha.

Why would somebody care what country a company comes from?

more jobs in said market, profit goes back to country, patriotical pride

The first two are valid reasons (though can be debated), but the third one shouldn't really be important when it comes to companies - economic benefits should always trump "national pride"

As it relates to video games, i read threads here all year round about Target have this sale or that sale with Video game A or B. Then i drive down to Zellers to check out the video game section, where they have very few new games and the old ones (2 years old) are there for $69.99. So for this department i welcome the change.

Zellers is owned by the hudson's bay company, which since 06 has been owned by the american company nrdc equity partners. So i dnno why ppl are making a big deal about it now.

I rarely ever step foot in zellers anymore. As far as I've known, the chain has been struggling for a long while. Just in my area, the number of zellers have gone down from 5 to 1 in the past decade. I dnno much about economics and all but I think we're probably better off with target coming in. For me personally, I think this gives me one extra store to go shopping at as zellers has been long forgotten in my mind.

EDIT: in my eyes this sale is essentially one major american corp. trading a chess piece w/ another major american corp.

Thats true and I was aware of it. Zellers and HBC have been American owned for years and I was super pissed when that happened. But at least Zellers and HBC remained somewhat Canadian in the fact that the guy who bought them got Canadian citizenship and the company remained headquartered in Canada and only found in Canada.

Now with Target their is absolutely nothing Canadian about it. I hate to see all my countries stores getting picked up by American companies. Whats next StarBucks buying Tim Hortons? Better not happen!

Now don't get me wrong everytime I cross the border I go to Target. I love Target because I get products their that aren't availible in Canada, like Vanilla Coke or Buttermilk bread. But a Canadian Target won't carry those products so their is no upside to me to see Target take over Zellers.

Also I have gotten extremely pleased with the way Zellers has been operating the last few years. Lower prices and great boxing day sales. I also prefer Zellers brand clothing to Walmart or Superstore (Which has zip). I'm suprized so many Canadian's on here don't mind to see them go.

As someone else said at least us Canadian's have Superstore, one last Canadian chain to shop at.

Quebec doesn't have superstore :(

And infact, I've bought more shirts from walmart than i have zellers (well i've bought none at zellers lol) but walmart tends to update cool tshirts. i recently got a comic book style spiderman shirt and a popeye shirt. and they had some nice super mario shirts but 2 kids shirts is enough for a guy my age lol.

Anyway, as someone mentioned, the few times I've been to zellers, its just disgusting to see half-empty shelves of videogames and old games w/ their original 60-70$ price tag.

But even w/ all the negative, I will miss it, Joelcool... for a few minutes. Anyway don't fret. Canadian banks have been shopping around quite a bit lately, buying assets in the states, europe, and SA. Canadian stability FTW!!

As long as the Hudson's Bay Company is not purchased then I am satisfied.

Biggest one, profit from Walmart, Target and all the other American companies goes where? Not spent in Canada or kept in Canada. It goes to the US. Target right now says they will double the amount of staff working at their stores, but Zellers did carry many Canadian products and invested alot of money in Canada which in turn meant more Canadian jobs.

Also yes I have patriotical pride in my countries stores. Sure Zellers is not the cheapest and is not Walmart. But it is at least was Canadian. I like knowing that Canada is different then America. Once Target takes over Zellers we will have most of the big American companies here in Canada and very few of our own.

I like visiting the states to shop at Target and other American stores like K-Mart. But that does not mean I want to see them all up here. I guess many Canadians don't seem to care that all our companies are being gobbled up but I certainly do. Canada is Canada it isn't Northern United States.

For me its an identity crisis, what seperates Canada's market from America's? If every Canadian retailer is owned by American companies and all our money goes to American corporations whats left thats truly Canadian?

I wouldn't mind some Targets in Britain, I mean we already got Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda(Wal-Mart), Morissons, so extra competition will be good, especially American, the quality is a bit worse than the usual but the prices are competitive! When it comes to entertainment in particular, games, music, films etc.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I will never look at Cadbury bar again in the same way since Kraft's takeover, please don't purchase our culture!
