Forums - General - Target taking over Zellers (Canada VS America)

Zellers sucks. I've never seen a Target store, but i pretty sure its going to be an improvement for Canadians.

Target is basically a bit fancier Walmart. Slightly higher prices, for higher quality. Even the dollar section has some pretty good deals and decent quality items.

This is also good news since now Canadians should be able to buy the Method line of cleaning products which are environmentally safe but way stronger then the chemical based crap.

Also most targets have Starbucks in it and their own cafe. Their cafe's food is pretty damn good. And mix that with a drink from Starbucks. Awesome lunch there.

Meh, I don't really shop there much... I'll always associate it with a funky smell (childhood trauma methinks) and Superstore and Walmart and especially Costco! are better for cheap stuff anyways. But does that mean my HBC card won't work there any more?

I'm pretty sure they've been selling Method stuff here for awhile now. I've seen it at grocery stores and London Drugs.

Probably does. Could be certain products or full range. No matter what its another place to buy them and at a lower cost.

Zellers is owned by the hudson's bay company, which since 06 has been owned by the american company nrdc equity partners. So i dnno why ppl are making a big deal about it now.

I rarely ever step foot in zellers anymore. As far as I've known, the chain has been struggling for a long while. Just in my area, the number of zellers have gone down from 5 to 1 in the past decade. I dnno much about economics and all but I think we're probably better off with target coming in. For me personally, I think this gives me one extra store to go shopping at as zellers has been long forgotten in my mind.

EDIT: in my eyes this sale is essentially one major american corp. trading a chess piece w/ another major american corp.

Thats true and I was aware of it. Zellers and HBC have been American owned for years and I was super pissed when that happened. But at least Zellers and HBC remained somewhat Canadian in the fact that the guy who bought them got Canadian citizenship and the company remained headquartered in Canada and only found in Canada.

Now with Target their is absolutely nothing Canadian about it. I hate to see all my countries stores getting picked up by American companies. Whats next StarBucks buying Tim Hortons? Better not happen!

Now don't get me wrong everytime I cross the border I go to Target. I love Target because I get products their that aren't availible in Canada, like Vanilla Coke or Buttermilk bread. But a Canadian Target won't carry those products so their is no upside to me to see Target take over Zellers.

Also I have gotten extremely pleased with the way Zellers has been operating the last few years. Lower prices and great boxing day sales. I also prefer Zellers brand clothing to Walmart or Superstore (Which has zip). I'm suprized so many Canadian's on here don't mind to see them go.

As someone else said at least us Canadian's have Superstore, one last Canadian chain to shop at.

Never been to Zellers but that's an awful name

That's my only input. Thank you and goodnight.

oh yes...definitely great boxing day sales at zellers...i was looking at an item that was 70% off and still six times the regular price at walmart.  zellers is super fucked up and it deserves to die.

we have target in australia except the australian market is funny. Apart from Costco (which there is only one, and only allowed because you have to pay to get in) no big american companies are aloud in australia.

I heard somewhere that it is because they are too massive and kill the australian retailers. Target is different in australia, owned by a different company as well. Our target has things like clothes, shoes, hygiene products, snack foods, gaming etc but they are not competitive to the electronic stores, they dont do big game releases etc etc. When I hear of the American target and certain star shopping there it makes me laugh, that is casual shopping here haha.

Why would somebody care what country a company comes from?

Personally, I'd love to see Target enter the UK market, though I don'tg see how a buy-in would be possible - Tesco and Walmart are number 1 & 2, respectively, and both are far larger companies - Sainbury's (3rd) would probably also be too big for Target to swallow - though not impossible if Target want to risk such a large aquisition.

Far more likely, though, would be if they were to just enter the market naturally (like Best Buy did last year), or purchase a far smaller chain (as ASDA was at the time when Walmart first purchased them) - perhaps Morisson's, or something.

Anywho, the more companies working in the UK, battling out for my money, the better - providing not only me with cheaper products and better services, but also allowing for prices to increase for farmers (Tesco's monopoly means that they can set prices for the suppliers - quite often at lower than what it costs the suppliers to make - having more firms competing for suppliers will result in fairer deals for the suppliers).

All-in-all, the more competition, the better, and I can't see why somebody would be patriotic over a company - especially one like Zellers, which seems to have left a rather unfavourable opinion on many of the Canadian posters in this thread.

You know what that sounds like? An American Target.
