Forums - Microsoft - GameStop Wants Access To Your Xbox Live Account

Kotaku

While GameStop is perfectly happy selling you Xbox Live points cards at the moment, in the future, the retailer wants to do more than that. It wants your Xbox Live details, so it can send you the stuff it's selling.

"Today you pick the card up off the rack that's associated with that map pack, we ring it up as part of your transaction in the store, and then we give you the code that allows you go home and [access the content]", GameStop's Shawn Freeman tells Ars Technica.

"Ultimately, we want to reduce even more of that friction, so when you buy that map pack in our store, we're going to be able to associate your Xbox profile with your GameStop profile, and then automatically push that to your download queue."

This means if you buy something digital in a GameStop store, and left your console on while you were out, by the time you get home it'll have downloaded and be there waiting you.

Umm..no thanks. I would rather just put the code in and add it myself. I am not handing over that much information to any company...even if I work for them right now.

How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Meh, it's not a horrible deal, I just don't feel the need to go to Gamestop to buy my DLC.

It's not like you're going to get spammed because I doubt they could mass message you unless you opted in.  Personally, I hate entering the codes.

I just queue up from Xbox.com or via Xbox Live.  I never understood the point of buying a code from a store.  A Points card, maybe.

As for the spam that Twesterm mentioned--I let some stranger become my friend on Xbox Live.  Every time I turned around, he was sending me messages about deals, getting free MS Points, and joining tournaments.  I eventually had to block communication.  I bet Gamestop would have some similar process--telling us about deals on sequels to games that we've played or something.  I just don't like the idea of ANYBODY having access to my account except me.

There's a difference between scammers and a professional business.  Gamestop would have to obey by certain rules AND it would be simple enough to block them since according to this they would never need to message you.

If they gave me a 10% discount on it I would do it.  Otherwise they can go fish.

I think its more for people who prefer to pay in cash. But I am with some others in this thread I wouldn't trust gamestop.

If you give it, they will steal.

How lazy can you be that you can't put a 25 digit code in yourself .....

no

we won't.

while it is a cool service for some people I agree though for the most part people should find it easier just buying DLC themselves
