Forums - General - Disney bringing 15 new and old movies to 3D blu-ray in 2011

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/03/disney-commits-to-at-least-15-blu-ray-3d-releases-for-2011-inc/

Even though Blu-ray 3D officially hit the streets in 2010, actually finding any discs available at retail was easier said than done, but that may be turning around this year starting with Disney announcing it plans "at least 15" releases this year. Recent 3D hits like Tron: Legacy and Tangled will be available at retail in 3D day-and-date with the 2D DVD & Blu-ray releases, with conversions of classics like The Lion King andBeauty in the Beast also in the works. Like it or not, the consistent box office success means there is more 3D than ever on the way, and it won't be any different at home. Check the press release after the break for a few more details about which movie will find their way out of the Disney vault in 2011.

Great to see some real 3D blu-ray support rather than the exclusivity nonsense that's been going on so far. I wonder how the old movies will be in 3D, hopefully they'll be good!

Does anyone else notice that 3D movies in general are almost always children or children targeted movies and then realize how much of an insane gimmick 3D is?

I'm serious, for every non-children 3D movie you can list, I can probably list 10 3D children oriented movies.

I'm guessing there's a different reason that target audience for why these movies are 3D. As 3D has only recently really gained traction with movie goers, traditional movies have not been created in 3D. But animated movies that are easily translated to 3D have been. That's why most of the 3D movies to date are movies children can watch as well, they're animated.

Polar Express, Chicken Little, Open Season, The Ant Bully, Monster House and Meet the Robinsons  represent half the 3D movies released from 2003 to 2007. The only two movies on that list featuring real people are "Spy Kids 3D" and "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D".

In 2009, 3D is becoming popular, so 3D movies begin to cater to different audiences. It's only just starting to grow. And I'm loving it!

All the 3D computer animated movies can be rerendered but please don't ruin the 2D hand drawn movies. Card board cut out versions of aladdin, the lion king etc, no thanks.

It's not easy to make modern action movies in 3D. The fast cutting, camera shaking, zooming and quick panning all don't work very well in 3D. A movie like Caroline is much more suited for 3D.

I don't know if 3D will ever add much for mature movies. Would Inglorious Basterds have more tension in 3D? I think it would just break the tension.

It works well for animation and moderately well for sci-fi on the big screen if slowed down properly. Inception would already be pretty hard to watch in 3D.

Uh... Beauty and the Beast was released on Blu-ray last year.  Geez, the milking.

Hopefully this at least means Finding Nemo will finally come out.  They started advertising that on Blu when HD DVD was still around.
