PS3 will have many 1mil weeks when its gets cheaper, the console is still the most expensive of the 3, and is still doing comparatively well despite success of Kinect, theres many other xmas holidays left!

Woo Kinect In Japan, now outselling GT5! Rose week over week for 4th straight week.

Hopefully it can establish a good base out there.

WW, Kinect nearly at 1 mill this week alone, wow!

Yeah, I noticed that too.  Almost 3 times the sales of the console.  Wonder if the word of mouth in Japan is coming alive now too.  On that other thread I chose 250k lifetime sales of it, but let a Monster Hunter game debut or someone like Kojima release an exclusive game for it and you can pretty much blow that all up.

Doesn't look like the software is doing much over there, though.  Some games either must not be released or aren't tracked.

The fact it's selling way above the console itself shows its currently selling mainly to the existing 360 base.  The slow rise indicates not bad word of mouth but unless it translates to actual console sales growth it's only selling to the converted, which is good for MS in terms of solidifying it's niche foothold in Japan, but doesn't really help much with overall penetration - i.e. preaching to the converted is good for keeping them converted but doesn't bring in new fans.

As with the 360 HW sales worldwide the number (for Kinect) is so small relative to the other markets it's only really a curiosity.

A game such as something by Kojima might well change things - and in fact I figure MS best chance of seeing what I would personally consider real success with Kinect in Japan would be to fund some centric, high profile titles.  I doubt you'll see MH though, the big question there is where it goes with PSP2 and 3DS.

But Kojima has shown some interest in Kinect so you never know on that front.

I get the feeling though, particularly once MS really pick their way through the December sales, that their focus for Kinect is going to be US and then maybe later Europe - depending upon speed with which they localize it further.

Japan really isn't going to be worth any big investment for them I reckon.

No, not necessarily.  I've seen a lot of Kinect tech demos for PC coming out of Japan so it's reasonable to assume that at least some of those are being sold to people who probably don't even OWN an Xbox.  What the percentage is I have no idea but it definitely explains some of the sales.

But the 360's 1 million weeks came with no price cut and when it did cut one of its sku's to $199 it didn't hit it.  This generation is pretty hard to predict, so I wouldn't be too quick to think all of the PS3 current sales woes (yeah, some actually view it that way ...) will be solved with a price cut and it'll hit a million many times.  The economic situation, what competitors do and new software experiences (still waiting for that Move game to make it stand out), as well as a number of other unforeseen things, could cause any number of boosts and drops.

Of course if that new rumor about the console being cracked is real, it could DEFINITELY see a huge, sustainable HARDWARE boost ...

I picked up the newpaper 1 month ago, and on every other page their was an advertisiment for Kinect. Microsoft have spend half a billion to market this device. imo thats why depite when they had that price cut its had these numbers. Kinect has been their ace in the hole, and thats why the console is selling, without Kinect i doubt those sales could be realised.

i agree with what you've said, the PS3 sales could be described as woes, but the console has sold very well despite the stiff competition this hoilday season. imo Microsoft cant replicate the success of their console without Kinect this year or next. Sony's been short of 1mil this year by about 150,000 units for about 2 or 3 weeks this season.

and its done that without the same type of advertising as Nintendo or Microsoft, and wihout smaller prices points, thus i think there will be many 1 mil weeks in years to come.

part of my rational is that Microsoft or NIntendo might decide to release new consoles soon; because of the billions of losses of the PS3 this gen, i highly doubt the PS4 is coming for a very long time. Sony wont make this mistake like Sega did imho.

Correction.  According one report the marketing budget allocated to Kinect was 500 million, however no timeline was ever specified.  That budget could have been allocated over 1 year or more, we have no idea.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that they spent that amount over just these last 2 month.  It borders on absurd actually.

500 million is not as out of line with what the other companies spend if you spread it over a year.  A quick google search shows that Sony allocated 250 million for marketing for the Playstation brand in the US ONLY in 2002.  That was 9 years ago.

Last year this week.

ConsoleWeekly (change)Total
Wii 1,983,968 ( 12%) 64,608,929
PS3 999,823 (-2%) 31,293,064
X360 746,469 ( 10%) 36,646,786

YoY changes

Wii down 8%
PS3 down 11%
X360 up 42%

Wait, does that mean the PS3 got a 1M selling week? If it sold 999k (-2%) then the previous wek must have been over 1M.

Anyway Kinect Adventures is a 5M seller. To hell with anyone who said MS would never publish a 5M seller which wasn't Halo, to HELL indeed.

Just Dance 2 looks like it will be the second Wii 3rd party 5M seller which wasn't in any way involved with a Nintendo Character.

Donky Kong sales suck, hardly worth mentioning only to say how much they suck.

Kinect Sports just short of 2M sales, pretty much almost assured to be Rares first 5M seller since the N64 days. Critics be silenced...?

Epic Mickey doesn't Mickey about in crossing the 1M mark.

Halo: Reach is 3/4 of the way to 10M so another confirmed 10M seller there.

Dance Central crosses the 1M mark and represents the 3rd Kinect million seller.

Need for Speed is actually selling well.

Forza 3 just short of 5M now at 4.3M, will be the first Forza over 5M?

Just Dance 1 is first for being the first non Nintendo related 3rd party game to cross 5M.

Kinectimals is threatening to be the 4th Kinect million seller, eww.

Are you excluding Gears of War as well, or am I missing something here?

Thank you for consistently saying "imo".

The reality that can't be denied by anyone are the sales that we see and, as we'll see in coming months, how profitable gaming is for these companies (much harder with Sony and Microsoft's obscuring them in larger divisions, though).  They're all important numbers and, as impressive as sales as a whole are for all three consoles, this is only sustainable if its profitable.

Though we still have one week left, based on VGC's numbers this looks to be the 2nd sliding sales year for overall platform sales in a row.  Kinda makes all of this hi-fiving we're doing quite fleeting ...

How so wonderful...
