Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Against the grain: Why achievements should be banned/removed (short post)

I don't think there is a problem with achievements or trophies in concept, but I find them a little pointless in their current form ... Effectively, they're somewhat similar to challenge based unlockables that used to be fairly common in games without the in-game benefit of these unlockables.

Personally, if it was up to me I would try to extend these achievements to include in game unlockables and possibly items that could be added to your avatar/Mii; while it is not the most exciting thing, it would be interesting to be able to give your avatar a green tunic for finishing Zelda (and whatnot).

Wel 360 kinda has that with Game Awards (Completel 20 levels of VS on L4D2 and get a L4D2 t shirt for your avatar)

Get rid of online achievements.

This helps people who don't have online.

But more importantly, multiplayer is not messed with by whores like me trying to do stupid things, such as run over people with a helicopter all game (BFBC2). Also the streaking achievements in sports games make people like me rage really hard, which leads to a lot more leavers who are trying so desperately to get the achievement (like me)

yea I bought King Kong and actually it wasn't half bad, just sometimes annoying with them always making me save everyone else. However I think achievements that are to hard ruin a game. For instance, GTA IV. Play the whole game and also do extra for 300 achievement points, what a joke. Some help to give replay value but some are just a joke how much you have to do. Some Tiger Woods is plagued with these achievement issues. I Think games like Oblivion got it right, knowing the game is very long you can get them all within the side quests and main quests in one play through

I think this can stop sales too, If achievements are just way to hard to get. I think that playing through the game should get you atleast half the achievements of the game. If you want to make them play it on hard fine but then it comes down to how good the gameplay is. If it is hard to control then this can ruin the game as well. So if your game is just ok, then make the achievements easier. The better the game the more you can raise the bar.

Like lost planet, I won't even play it because the achievements are just to hard for the game. Not really so much hard but they are a lot of online and if your online sucks then who wants to play to get them, no one. You are right though achievements are addictive and should be chosen wisely. If not, it can ruin the game or just make you feel ripped off.

OH YEA, secret achievements are just stupid. I go online and read them right away, so what the point? To get me online, that will happen anyway.

This. Oblivion has the best acheivements on any game for me, made me want to play and finish al side-quests.

But acheivements which you get for advancing with the story are stupid, especially if more than half of them are like this.

Similarly, online-only acheivements puts people who can't go online at a disadvanage

Also-Bioshock. That didn't have secret acheivements. I found out right at the start Atlas was the baddy, you became a Big Daddy and you killed Ryan with a golf club. That's unfair man...

Good points but when they use secret achievements for stupid reasons. Advancing the story is great way to do it because you got the game for that reason. Sorry bioshock got ruined for you.

It's OK, but I'm sure it's not just me. It's just like at the end of The Unwound Future when (SPOILER WARNING!!!)))

it turns out future Luke is actually evil and london in the future is actually underground, and that Claire is actually in the present. If that had been said in some sort of acheivements system then maybe I wouldn't have been so engrossed by the story, and the ending certainly wouldn't have been so dramatic...

END!!!

Do you see my point? Secret acheivements are worthwhile if key plot twists need to be hidden. But not solely to annoy people

agreed

i really don't see  the point of archievements or trophies. i just finished playing alan wake(btw one of the best game ive played ever very underated. it reminded me of the awosomess of resident E 1-3, and why i really hate that action crap sulvivar horror wanna be 4 and 5). well playing alan wake i made a ton of archievments and it meant nothing i just followed my story. the point is what does archievements add to the game and the story?

I play a game till I get to the end credits. If I happen to get some trophies along the way or not doesn't concern me. There are far too many great games out there ready to be played to care about getting all the achievements.

I enjoy earning trophies i have about 1250 of them, theyre fun to get sometimes it makes me play the games longer than i would. I havent bought any games just for the trophies but a few of the games ive bought i may not have bought if they didnt have trophies.

The Resident Evil 5 DLC was on sale on the PSN i was pondering on wether to get it or not, when i found out it had trophies it made up my mind straight away.

I love the inclusion of trophies and achievements. But i firmly believe they should be removed for ALL games with multiplayer. No matter what people say, trophies and achievements turn people into complete assholes online. I can't recall how many times I've been voted out of a game, team killed, or just nagged at because I accidentally screwed up someones chance to nab an achievement or trophy..

Because I don't spend a lot of money with the happy ladies in ACII doesn't mean I didn´t finish the game. OP's picture is what achievements means to me: nothing relevant.
