Looking at the installbase difference, MH became IMO the biggest IP in Japan. I dont think that even Pokemon can push that many systems anymore. Lets be honest, MH is the reason the PSP is the best selling system in Japan for some time now. its true, there are other pretty solid game on it there, but they all came because of MH. If Sony gets tehir act together, this success could easily translate into good PSP2 numbers in the land of the rising sun

It's still not bigger than Super Mario Bros, Wii Fit, Mario Kart or Wii Sports going by install bases (which all have done proportionately better on Wii than Monster Hunter has on PSP).  Ratio arguments tend to favor smaller userbases, this works in PSP's favor vs DS, but in Wii's favor vs PSP.  I'd say MH may have eclipsed DQ as the biggest 3rd party series now though.  It's not past Mario or Pokemon though, so it can't take the crown overall yet.  There's also stuff like Brain-Age and Animal Crossing that sold higher in the past, though we'll have to see how they'll hold up on 3DS.

And PSP2's success in Japan likely rests on MH.  I'm sure both Sony and Nintendo are doing everything in their power to land the series on their systems.

You're probably right, but if 3DS has a RE, a KH, a MGS, a Mario and some other big IPs in its first fiscal year, I don't think it would be easy for Sony to sell systems, even with a MH, and bad sales would mean less chance for future MHs...

Yeah, 3DS is already getting the sort of content you'd expect 3rd parties to push on PSP2, which is going to make Sony's job that much tougher.  In a way, Nintendo is really pushing 3DS as the successor to both DS and PSP, and the major 3rd parties are seemingly going along with that which doesn't leave much actual room for PSP2.  Sony's got a hard road ahead, and if they lose handheld Monster Hunter to Nintendo, I think PSP2's looking at a PS3 style market presence at best...

But who's to say that the PSP2 won't be getting similar (or even the same) games from the very same 3rd parties? Not that I care about the PSP2, I'll be getting a 3DS, but if they get support from the very same 3rd parties plus "higher level" graphics plus some exclusives like Uncharted etc, I don't think they will be in as much trouble as people expect.

That's possible, but first of all, will such an hardware sell well? As I said, if Nintendo is able to launch so many big IPs in its first year, many people will be convinced to buy the console and the games, and a PSP2 with better graphics but way smaller userbase would not be a good choice for Capcom. Sure, if ALL the third parties decide to port their 3DS games to the PSP2 it's possible for PSP2 to reach 3DS numbers, but that won't happen, I'm sure Nintendo will prevent this...so the only way the PSP2 could beat the 3DS IMHO is with something new and fresh like the Wiimote was in 2006, not with just better graphics, better online, 3D or anything.

And this is all to say that right now I think it's more probable to have a first MH on 3DS than on PSP2, because even the most loyal userbase, if is small, won't bring you much money.
